Authorities respond to reported shooting near Houston’s Lakewood church

Houston police quickly responded to Lakewood Church after receiving initial reports of possible shots fired around Lakewood Church.

The church confirmed shots were fired, adding, "Please pray for Lakewood and our community."

According to local law enforcement officials, the suspect has been shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooter has been identified as a 30 to 35-year-old female who entered the church around 1:53 p.m. ET. She was holding a long riffle, carrying a backpack, and holding the hand of a small child.

Witnesses say she was claimed to have a bomb in her backpack and was spraying an unknown substance on the church's ground.

Multiple Law enforcement agencies are on-site collaborating on the investigation and will remain on the scene for the next several hours.

They believe this is an isolated incident, and they are conducting a deeper investigation to make sure no one else is inside the church.

Two victims had been taken to the hospital. A 5-year-old- boy is in critical condition and a 57-year-old male is being treated for a hip injury after being shot in the leg.

Several off-duty officers were at the church at the time of the shooting and were able to take the suspect down before she could claim any lives.

Governor Greg Abbott today issued a statement on the shooting near Lakewood church in Houston:

“Our hearts are with those impacted by today’s tragic shooting and the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston. Places of worship are sacred. I have been in contact with Mayor Whitmire and offered the full support and resources of the State of Texas, including Department of Public Safety officers and Texas Rangers, to help this community and help bring swift justice to the criminal who committed this heinous act. Join Cecilia and me in praying for this community during this difficult time and for the brave men and women in blue who acted quickly to respond to this tragedy.”

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it is believed that the shooter was shot by a Harris County deputy.

"We also have HCSO deputies who work extra-jobs at the church," he added.

Lakewood Church, founded by Joel and Delores Osteen, is among the largest congregations in the country, averaging about 45,000 attendees per week, according to its website.

Officials set up a reunification center at Lamar high school and are asking people to avoid the area at this time.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

@Android raptor I hope you have an alibi...
I'm doing laundry lol

Plus why shoot a kid instead of a chomo pastor?

My bet is someone with a vendetta (like a CSA victim or someone scammed by the church, or a disgruntled former employee) or a loony church member going violently insane.

Nice try we all know that you've sent Sam Hyde in a dress to do it.

Phew! After you said you were doing laundry I thought you might have been hacked, but your trademark insane disconnect from reality assuaged my fears instantly.

The 'suspect' was shot dead on scene. Maybe take just one moment to get all the facts? Nah, kid got shot - knock out all the platitudes facts be damned.

From my understanding Olsteen wasn’t there. It was some special Spanish service.
Well, shit. That sucks.

Can't stand Osteen and his ilk. The prosperity gospel preachers are nothing but thieves taking advantage of the poor and gullible.
No minister should have private jets or lock storm refugees out of their "church".

Sorry about her child and the man who was hurt.

Name it and claim it is also called "blab it and grab it" for a reason. Completely unchristian behavior. By their own doctrines, Jesus HIMSELF was not "living for Jesus the right way" because He didn't have fancy clothes or homes or a lot of money.

That's my old church. Family left as a kid because they started to get weird and go into megachurch, bought out the Rockets theater. It's weird to do this though, because of course there's a lot of armed people in a Texas church. And to bring the kid, too. I wonder what they were spraying? They'd better release more details soon there's not much to go on. That woman had a suicide wish and wanted to bring her kid with her though, that's very likely.

You mean like because a wignat with a bowl cut thought a church was the perfect place to kill black people? Or because a doctor that performed late term abortions for women with FUBAR fetuses was attending services?

A thought occurred to me, I wonder if that was even her kid or if the kid had any relation. Lakewood has a lot of youth groups, although I'm hard pressed to believe she walked into a classroom with a rifle and was like "yo I'll take that one right there" and ran off to the main assembly, if she even made it that far. I mean, it's mentioned she was spraying shit on the ground, I wonder if she even made it into the building.

So did the cops shoot the kid?
A woman in a trenchcoat opened fire with a long gun inside celebrity pastor Joel Osteen’s megachurch in Texas before being gunned down by two off-duty officers who confronted her,
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said it was not clear whether the child was struck by the off-duty officers who returned fire. He said a 57-year-old man also was shot and wounded.
Finner said that after the woman began shooting, both officers “engaged” her and the woman was killed. He said that unfortunately “a 5-year-old kid was hit” although he released no immediate details on how the confrontation unfolded.

Signs point to him being hit when they returned fire, but no official word on that yet.
