What are you playing right now?

Turns out Maneater is better if you know how to play it properly. You actually lunge forward when you bite, so it's breach, LUNGE, tailwhip to clear a deck. Makes it so much smoother. I think it takes too long to start introducing some of its mechanics (common vidya problem in general).

Another Humble Bundle one I got was Wytchwood. Now, I went in with basically no background on it and not as its target audience, just knowing it's a game where you play a fairy tale like witch - a witch that doesn't sling around fireballs (something I hate in fantasy) but actually goes out and gathers things like eyes of newts to make potions. What stood out was that it had a very striking aesthetic, like a cross between Don't Starve and a Supergiant game. Papery, colorful, striking and vibrant and clean.

So what is this girlshit like? Well, it feels like Don't Starve with all the tension ripped out. Don't Starve with women, both because women are into witches and women are casuals. The general handling of it, perspective and aesthetic give that feeling, but aside from that, it is also like Don't Starve in that you spend all your time scraping around in the dirt collecting things to make other things. However, there's no survival mechanic or other threats to force you to do things. It's not that genre, after all. There's enemies. Could be obstacles. Easily avoided. If you have something you need to collect/kill, it has a specific thing that does the job.

So so far, kind of boring. Doing alchemy in Kingdom Come Deliverance feels more like a witchcraft simulator (I can roam around and pick mushrooms but can also manually grind and boil and distill and do all the steps of brewing in 3D glory).

This game may be one of those shallow as a puddle, deep as an ocean things (pardon me). It took me forever to figure out how to actually be somewhat good at it. One big realization: you have essentially three ways to kill something. If it's a sea creature, you thrash it (game doesn't explain you can trash anything smaller than you) or keep biting. Thrashing is faster but effectively immobilizes you. Repeated biting doesn't slow you near as much. Can haul it around in your mouth. Where things get interesting is that humans drown if in the water too long, and in the deep water you can actually dive out of range of gunfire, so... that doesn't even become relevant until quite late in the game, but it means you can, in addition to tailwhipping people, intentionally carry them to the bottoms, drowning them along the way, quickly eat them, then go for another breach.

I also really like that, in the vein of something like Doom, you fight your way back into health, but what I hadn't realized was that I should have been prioritizing knocking people out of the boats and then leaving them for only when I NEED the health boost.

Wish this game had more reactive people on shores. They mostly just stand around and scream. That's perfectly consistent with the tone, but it would have been just as fitting if a few of them in a given group fight back. Imagine a pissed off golfer smacking you with their golf club, a little old woman with her purse, or a person trying to mow you down in their car.

Bioshock. I usually dislike FPS and first person in general. The only FPS I ever really enjoyed was Zero Tolerance. But the collection was on sale and I like the theme and the art deco style. It's a pretty good game. I took a break from Pokemon Violet since I'm near the end of the story anyway. I just finished Wonderful Everyday and when I play I VN I don't play anything else until I'm 100%. I didn't want to start another VN so soon because then I'll autistically stick with it until I have every ending,

Picked up Last Epoch, have been in the mood to play an ARPG and since I lack the autism necessary to manage Path of Exile and Diablo 4 is shit this seemed like a nice new middle ground.
Runs good on the Steam Deck too.

Been playing my Aircraft Carriers more in World of Warships recently, as well as getting back into battleships.

First, people bitching about Aircraft Carriers: stop. They've been nerfed to hell. If you play a CV, you are playing support and hoping your planes don't die to ridiculously accurate flak. Your job is to distract. Which is fun tbh.

As for battleships, I've had a lot, they've just been stuck because while I've unlocked most of their upgrades, I don't have the coins to do it. So I've said fuck it, I'm playing them anyway. It helps give their captains XP and unlock skills. Also battleships make fucktons if you get wins. Having fun not dying in 5 shots. But as always, submarines are a menace.

Picked up Pacific Drive and enjoying it so far. It's got a cozy vibe and I like taking care of my car. But my enjoyment took a dip when I built the customization station and (Queer pride sticker pack unlocked) showed up on the side of my screen. There are 22 fucking lgbt pride flags in this game covering everything from Abrosexual to what ever the fuck a Neutrois is. And to top it off there is a BLM flag mixed in. Was this in the demo?

Well, that's one game to take off my wishlist then.

I've been playing My Time at Sandrock and it's been pretty good. Lots to do, lots of story and progression. It's just a nice comfy game. Then I look outside at my urban hellscape and want to move out to the country because damn even a dying desert town looks like better living than whatever neo-feudalism we're living under is.

Glad I didn't purchase it. I don't usually pre-release purchase games but this was a close exception. Would've gone through with it too if the coupon code I was using wasn't region locked.

So Not for Broadcast does get faggier the further in you get. Less funny, too. So far I've sat through bits on muh COVID denial and muh global warming delivered through (in the former case) metaphor. But I still can't say it's a Left-wing game. It zigs and zags in really interesting ways. What blew me away in the last broadcast was it having this twist where the Kanye/Alex Jones parody turns out to be the leader of the resistance and people are laughing it off (sort of) while his supporter argues that the messenger doesn't matter. It's interesting stuff.

Wytchwood is getting better. I think I posted about it somewhere. Fetch Quest: The Game. It tells you exactly what you need and you just go harvest it to solve each problem. You can die but there's no combat as such, everything you run into is resolved by "crafting" (crafting is not a simulation, I mean press the button to make item). That sounds like it would be very shallow and boring, and at first it is. Story is like a fairy tale with lazy dialogue. But I think what it is going for is "relaxing," and you know, it works. If you just tune out and go about your business, it's simple and pretty and engaging, like organizing files but better. I think I like it.

Thinking about getting back into Death Stranding. I really love just truckin' it in that game. Tried out the demo for Mullet Mad Jack. That was pretty fun, too. Make sure to jack up the mouse sensitivity a bit before you start.

It occurred to me recently that of the Phantasy Star tetralogy, I haven't completed either 2 or 3 yet. So I've gotten Romhacks for both of 'em to improve the translations, as Phantasy Star is one of those games with an infamously inconsistent translation convention between games, as well as bump up the walking speed, because GOOD LORD do you walk slow in these games.

I've been (trying) to play Last Epoch, their launch has been awful but unsurprisingly so for an actual small company.
Played about a couple months before launch and it was fun then, better now, and the campaign/maps have been improved a lot but they didn't actually finish the story yet.

Just finished Assassins Creed Mirage. It was the right combination of modern AC and the old stuff, a nice little throwback. The Assassin's Bureaus look like the ones from the first game, and they're in the middle of building the fortress from the first game too. The story was simple enough, there's a conspiracy going on involving the poor being abused, so our guy goes in and discovers what's up.

But what I loved best was that they took out all the excessive weapon upgrading and management from Odyssey that caused me to quit, plus the levelling system that meant some targets couldn't be assassinated right away. And I didn't need to do every side mission to beat the next story quest, it just helped make things easier.

I am now contributing to trans genocide by playing Hogwarts Legacy and don't feel a shred of remorse. 🙄

Let's see:
Persona 3 reloaded
Helldivers 2 with coworkers as well as old friends
Palworld with the Mrs.
Dark Tide damnation runs from time to time.

Waiting for Unicorn overlord to come in and then i probably just sit for a bit with all that mess. Almost done with this run of palworld.
I also hear we're getting 1.6 version of stardew valley within the next month (supposedly).

Been playing KOTOR 1 and it occurs to me that the incentives to min-max characters is backwards in that game. What do I mean by this? Well, the endgame robe for Light side players is the Star Forge robes, which give +5 to Wisdom. Combined with the Circlet of Saresh, it ends up as +10 to Wisdom. Wisdom is best used for offensive Force Powers, meaning that consulars benefit the most from this set up. The problem is LS consulars are better at buffing the party and self instead of attacking. Meanwhile, Darth Revan Robes give +4 to strength and regenerates health, which is better for guardians. Except Dark side spells are all offensive spells, so strength buff doesn't help DS consulars all that much and DS guardians shouldn't be focusing on spells as they reduce attack attempts.

I just gave the NIGHT-RUNNERS prologue/demo a go and really enjoyed it, but then I am a sucker for the 90s/00s Jap car scene. The racing is so/so but I'm loving just driving about carving through the various loops, and the OST compliments the game very nicely. Gonna load up TXR for the rest of the afternoon and have some fun in that.

I've been trying to play Last Epoch since Thursday and it's been a real shit show. At least 70% of my time has been waiting for map transitions to go through. What little I have played has been great through. Spellblade is perfect for me on controller. ☪️ I know, but M&K on Deck is even more so.
