Turns out Maneater is better if you know how to play it properly. You actually lunge forward when you bite, so it's breach, LUNGE, tailwhip to clear a deck. Makes it so much smoother. I think it takes too long to start introducing some of its mechanics (common vidya problem in general).
Another Humble Bundle one I got was Wytchwood. Now, I went in with basically no background on it and not as its target audience, just knowing it's a game where you play a fairy tale like witch - a witch that doesn't sling around fireballs (something I hate in fantasy) but actually goes out and gathers things like eyes of newts to make potions. What stood out was that it had a very striking aesthetic, like a cross between Don't Starve and a Supergiant game. Papery, colorful, striking and vibrant and clean.
So what is this girlshit like? Well, it feels like Don't Starve with all the tension ripped out. Don't Starve with women, both because women are into witches and women are casuals. The general handling of it, perspective and aesthetic give that feeling, but aside from that, it is also like Don't Starve in that you spend all your time scraping around in the dirt collecting things to make other things. However, there's no survival mechanic or other threats to force you to do things. It's not that genre, after all. There's enemies. Could be obstacles. Easily avoided. If you have something you need to collect/kill, it has a specific thing that does the job.
So so far, kind of boring. Doing alchemy in Kingdom Come Deliverance feels more like a witchcraft simulator (I can roam around and pick mushrooms but can also manually grind and boil and distill and do all the steps of brewing in 3D glory).

This game may be one of those shallow as a puddle, deep as an ocean things (pardon me). It took me forever to figure out how to actually be somewhat good at it. One big realization: you have essentially three ways to kill something. If it's a sea creature, you thrash it (game doesn't explain you can trash anything smaller than you) or keep biting. Thrashing is faster but effectively immobilizes you. Repeated biting doesn't slow you near as much. Can haul it around in your mouth. Where things get interesting is that humans drown if in the water too long, and in the deep water you can actually dive out of range of gunfire, so... that doesn't even become relevant until quite late in the game, but it means you can, in addition to tailwhipping people, intentionally carry them to the bottoms, drowning them along the way, quickly eat them, then go for another breach.
I also really like that, in the vein of something like Doom, you fight your way back into health, but what I hadn't realized was that I should have been prioritizing knocking people out of the boats and then leaving them for only when I NEED the health boost.
Wish this game had more reactive people on shores. They mostly just stand around and scream. That's perfectly consistent with the tone, but it would have been just as fitting if a few of them in a given group fight back. Imagine a pissed off golfer smacking you with their golf club, a little old woman with her purse, or a person trying to mow you down in their car.
