Why do so many Catholics identify as democrat in the US?

I think some identify themselves with unions and worker's rights which was traditionally democrat.

For me as a Catholic personally, I don't know any from my parishes that really ID with democrats. We just need our own party at this point.

Speaking as a Catholic who identifies as Nonpartisan/Independent that also leans Center-Left, my guess would be this: putting aside the issue of abortion, most Democratic issues do fall within some facets of Catholic social teaching/ideals. Like helping the homeless, taking care of the environment, fixing major wealth disparities, etc. Not necessarily into the realm of Progressivism (though there were historical figures like Dorothy Day who did have Socialist leanings through a Catholic perspective, she established the Catholic Worker movement), but there are some pockets that do.

It's the Protestant, Non-Denominational Evangelicals that heavily make up most Republican statistics AFAIK.

Many of whom also despise Catholics whether out of ignorance or malice.

I also think Catholic voters have gotten burned more than a few times by Republicans who talked up the pro-life stuff to win votes only to do absolutely nothing whatsoever about it or any other social issues. Especially when those same Republicans ran the country into the ground during the W years.

That last part is especially important: without derailing this into another abortion debate thread, the anti-abortion crowd (Strictly IMHO, but "pro-life" is a total misnomer, as a good chunk who claim to be so barely care about anything in that area after the baby is born, especially the elderly. Being pro-life is also anti-death penalty and anti-war, too.) bought into what the Republicans were selling and when they finally got what they wanted -Roe v. Wade turned over and returned to the states-, they didn't think everything through ahead of what that would ultimately entail and, well, you know the rest of the story.

But yes, a lot of Republican Protestants/Evangelicals do despise Catholics: JFK was the first ever Catholic president and he was hated by some for that very reason.

I also see the shit done by the other side every day. So I'd choose the Catholics over any faggot American ideology, be it faggot democrat or closet faggot alt-rep any day.

Key word being 'were'. But I am well aware they were southern state started. My ex was from Niedersachsen and he was extremely proud that they were heathens to the bitter end. I don't blame him either. I am of Lithuanian ancestry, so get it.

Well, like I mentioned earlier, that's not entirely inaccurate if you're going by the kind of Socialism that the likes of Dorothy Day championed. And bear in mind even she's despised by some Catholic Republicans for that reason, too, completely oblivious to the time she lived in and what the socio-economic factors were that factored into her political leanings (and also that she had an abortion, but that happened before she converted and had a daughter later on, which they conveniently forget).
