Odysseus becomes first US spacecraft to land on moon in over 50 years

Odysseus is heading for a landing site near Malapert A, an impact crater near the moon's south pole.
NASA describes it like this:
"(A) relatively flat and safe region is within the heavily cratered southern highlands on the side of the Moon visible from Earth."
The space agency said it chose this landing site for Intuitive Machines' first mission because it wanted to learn more about the lunar environment and how communications function in this area.
And there's a key reason why: NASA wants to scout the lunar south pole because the space agency believes it's the best location to set up a future astronaut base.

The US-made Odysseus lunar lander has made a touchdown on the moon, surpassing its final key milestones — and the odds — to become the first commercial spacecraft to accomplish such a feat, but the condition of the lander remains in question.

Intuitive Machines, however, says the mission has been successful.

"I know this was a nail-biter, but we are on the surface, and we are transmitting," Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus just announced on the webcast. "Welcome to the moon."

Odysseus is the first vehicle launched from the United States to land on the moon’s surface since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

Mission controllers from Intuitive Machines, the Houston-based company that developed the robotic explorer, confirmed the lander reached the lunar surface Thursday evening.

The uncrewed spacecraft traveled hundreds of thousands of miles from its Florida launch site at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center to the moon before making its final, perilous swoop to the lunar surface.

Can you imagine if the US Government didn't turn into a massive welfare state by importing untold millions of uneducated brown people who take out far more resources than they put in and instead focused on science and technological development? Where we might be?

Instead, here we find ourselves. Thank goodness that diversity is our strength.

It looks like a vending machine. That's actually a great idea. How can you cultivate foot traffic for local businesses if there's nothing there?

I still find it bizarre that Russia hasn't had a successful moon mission since the USSR collapsed, officially making their space program worse than fucking Luxembourg's.
What's really weird is USSR had several amazing Venus landers that nobody else did. They never, USSR or since, had a Mars lander that worked more than a minute. Their moon probes were mediocre too.

No human built anything has ever gone to Mars or the moon
If we ever make it this far, we're going to build a colony on the moon and have a museum dedicated to the Apollo program and people will stand outside of the building on the moon still saying that it was all fake.

I mean damn, we put retroreflectors on the moon during the Apollo missions, you can shoot a laser at the moon and it'll bounce back. There are some conspiracy theories that are worth some honest discussion, but you can't really deny that the Apollo program existed and did what it set out to do.

The biggest problem is that it stopped there, for some reason. If we kept it up dumbfuckistanis could have colonized the rings of Uranus by now.

American bros gettin ready for niggas in space.

I wouldn't say this is true. Up until SpaceX, the Soyuz was one of the most reliable launch vehicles and was the primary platform used to ferry people and cargo to and from the ISS.

The main issue in getting back to the lunar surface has been cost, but every day commercial space flight is getting cheaper and cheaper to do.

No human built anything has ever gone to Mars or the moon
How do you explain radio transmissions that you yourself can receive on 2.2 GHz, hell how do you rationalize satellites with this worldview that space is fake? Do you think they are attached to strings in the sky?

Don't give moon hoaxers a second of thought. Mythbusters did an hour long episode that basically said it would be harder to fake it than to actually do it.

And the Soviets would've spilled the beans, with spies inside and just the radio signal info from the surface of the moon. All combined it would've been far harder and costlier to fake it than what it took to do it for real. It's just flat Earth nonsense to think it's fake.

they can be broadcast from anywhere

satellites have never been to the moon or mars

pffft lol

do you guys just never take into consideration the ((((sources)))) that tell you {{{{we}}}} went there? or consider their lack of evidence? or motivation for fabricating such a story

"yeah dude, we totally went to the moon....huh? video? yeah, we threw them away, oopsie" lol.

The reality is we are all being conned. There is absolutely no plan to have a moon colony. You are being told this so you can get behind it because it costs a lot of money to get the technology right and without public support, they don't get the funding.

They need the water on the moon for chemical reactive processes that require water and perhaps the separate properties of oxygen and hydrogen, but not for human consumption, but for powering devices on the moon and equipment, namely rocket fuel - oxygen and hydrogen.

Humans are fucking annoying, they shit, require loads of oxygen, get roasted in radiation, have health issues, require sleep, loads of food and water, get bored, want to have sex, kids, have to be entertained and extreme maintenance. Robots and AI driven machinery does not - but even with unlimited electrical power sources on the moon you still need rocket fuel to launch minerals from the moon back to Earth.

The moon will be colonized by our drones and robots, but not by humans. For mining, and to act as perhaps (perhaps) a way point for refueling, but you don't need pesky humans for that. Oh perhaps some rich SOB will set up a base there for the rich and famous one day but unlike how Mr. Hilton dreamed it will not be manned by sexy women waiting for you, but drones that accept a ship with a temp crew for the base that travel with the guests but no permanent staff.

And yes, humans will have to travel there to set it up, but they aren't staying.

The real reason why water on Mars and the Moon mean something is because it equals rocket fuel, but they will tell you it's so Major Tom can have a Gatorade, but it isn't.

During the space race between America and the USSR - which was part of a larger ideological race to prove which was superior, communism or capitalism, The USSR beat America at every milestone.
In contrast, America beat the USSR to the nuke, though Russia carried on building better nukes when it eventually caught up to America.

That considered, why, if ideological superiority was so important on every metric, did the USSR - the superior space-farers, give up the ghost on getting to the moon?

Furthermore, why did only 4 missions go to the moon, over a course of 5 years, all from the same country, all using the same company and then abruptly stop, while ahead, with no other country even attempting to send a manned craft the moon ever again?

Ignoring all of the conspiracy theories, all of the solar wind, multiple shadows etc etc, why, why, why, did humanity just stop, in the middle of an ideological war, after only a few years, while accomplishing NOTHING on the moon or by going to the moon?

Why did USSR, Japan, Europe, China, including America, never fucking bother to return to the moon, not once, even to this day?

We get rererereremakes of shitty fucking films but the greatest achievement of a biological entity in all of the known universe, spanning a timeframe of at least 1.5 BILLION years have we, as a species, not even attempted to go back?

Occam's Razor says because we can't get there.

Mythbusters
The show that was cancelled due in part to being caught lying their fucking arse off about their dodgy 'mythbusting'? lol, lmao even.

How do you define 'better'? The USA has and had more advanced nukes. The Trident D5 can hit within 30-60 feet with 475kt. The Russian nukes were always bigger, because the delivery systems were less accurate. When it comes to bang for buck and size, there's no comparison in anything tested. Maybe the yield to size ratio has improved in Russia since the 90s, but I doubt it.

Simple, we're trying right now, so your premise if wrong. The reason is got canceled is high cost to low practical yield with the technology of the time. Tech's catching up though. And we basically have a good understanding by going to the moon on how it formed, the Thea theory. Jeez man. You moon hoaxers are worst than flat Earthers, cause at least that is relatively harmless ignorance.
