I am so grateful in hindsight that I was able to study abroad in Europe for a year, because nothing shattered my redditor sensibilities about the paradise Europe was than actually living among them.
Living among them and making easy friends with every other non-Euro, but getting politely rebuffed by every Euro you try to strike up a friendship with really reveals the intersection between their words, their desperate attempt to look more tolerant than Americans, and the ultimate failure of mass immigration to the continent into perspective.

I find the endless debates about metric vs imperial to be the most retarded and reddit-worthy of all points brought up both ITT and elsewhere.

Metric is a system that makes perfect sense if you're someone who grew up using it and being taught metric in school. Every 8 year old child in Europe knows exactly how long a centimeter is and how heavy a kilogram feels, and from that point onward for the rest of their life they don't need to think about it, they just know. No one here ever thinks "gosh darn it this is too abstract I wish we used imperial measurements instead" no one fucking cares, people just get it. It's ingrained in everyone's collective consciousness just like the fact that we drive on the right side of the road or that we all recognize a certain set of basic colors unlike Asians who confuse blue and green and shit like that.

The exact same thing goes for the imperial system in the US.

Most importantly the difference is completely irrelevant in practice and just about every person ends up coming into contact with both systems anyway. You could find a silly quirk in either system to make a strawman of to laugh at how retarded it is (when neither is really) but it's just beating a dead horse.

Dutch is literally the worst. Like I am forced to understand it because I am a dual English/German speaker, but I just don't get coughing up every word. My ex-FIL had a really good long laugh with me and my daughter one day because he doesn't get it either as even an Ostfriesian German.

Like it or not, blacks are comfy over here. Despite what the news suggests, most of them aren't dying in gang wars. They are well fed, with MANY advantages afforded to them by the government. Europe doesn't have any of that.

That's my favorite story of the cold war, and why communism is ass. A regular grocery store made the leader of the Soviet Union break the fuck down. Also Europe still doesn't have Wal-Mart.
