The Israeli Embassy in D.C., in 2016.

A man is in critical condition after setting himself on fire midday Sunday outside the Israeli Embassy in D.C., authorities said.

No one else was injured in the incident, which took place just before 1 p.m. in the 3500 block of International Drive NW. A video shared online, which multiple officials said appeared to be posted by the man, shows him shouting “Free Palestine” as he burned.

The man said he was an active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force. A spokeswoman for the Air Force, Ann Stefanek, said they had not yet identified the man or verified whether he is in the service.

Since the Israel-Gaza war began just over four months ago, at least 29,629 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack and says 240 soldiers have been killed since the start of its military operation in Gaza.

Hamas and allied fighters took more than 253 people hostage during the attack. More than 100 were freed in exchange for more than 200 Palestinian detainees during a November pause in fighting. Israeli authorities believe that more than 100 hostages remain in Gaza.

On Sunday, uniformed Secret Service officers responded to a report of a person experiencing a possible medical or mental health emergency, said Joe Routh, a U.S. Secret Service spokesman.

Responding officers put out the fire before D.C. firefighters arrived, around 1 p.m., fire department spokesman Vito Maggiolo said. The D.C. Fire and Emergency Services department then took the man to a hospital in life-threatening condition. He remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon.

In the video, which is just over three minutes long, one person can be heard saying, “Hi, sir, can I help you?” as the man approaches the gate to the embassy.

About 12 seconds later, as a person again asks, “Can I help you, sir,” the man lights the fire.

The man burned for about a minute and collapsed on the ground, the video showed, before law enforcement began to extinguish the fire.

I would imagine the guy was just content that you were doing as instructed. Had you just kept walking forward (or he was in a bad mood) he could have asked for your salute.
There’s no doubt that either are possibilities but generally just making an effort is enough for most people. Even to the lowest ranks Officers aren’t going to be a dick for no reason and those that are are usually treated like shit by other officers or are corrected.

There was a numbskull in my company when I was in boot camp like 40 or a thousand years ago.

He cried himself to sleep every night, and we all knew he was a broken brain, so we basically just shunned him. We knew he wasn't worth the effort of actively harassing, and potentially getting ourselves into trouble in the process, so we just ghosted him and let nature run its course.

One day, we were at a muster in the barracks, and he walked out of the bathroom, and, in full view of everybody and the company commander, he proceeded to guzzle down half a bottle of Windex.

And that was that. He was fine, and they just sent his weirdo ass back to wherever he came from.

Woulda been funnier if he had set himself on fire.

Tbh it's all noise and no bite, guy was such a pussy that he couldn't even kill any Israelis on the way out.

His maintaining that there were no innocents on Oct 7th is hilarious though. I guess the children, Muslims, and Israeli Arabs should have done something else somehow?

I hope everyone inspired by his actions decides to emulate him, he was an hero
I've just seen it and it really is the tipping point from "just a loonie" to "he deserves his fate". The guy hated his own country, he tries to justify murdering civilians and all for people who are probably call him a pussy for not taking anyone with him.

But what was he expecting the Air Force to be run like an Indie Game Studio? "They treated me like a lesser human being." 😭
Funnily enough, the Waffen SS (the German and volunteer units) was a rather tight-knit and egalitarian force (so long as you were an Aryan) compared to the rest of the Wehrmacht. Many of the SS officers were promoted from the ranks and they were much more understanding of the enlisted under their command compared to the average Heer, Kriegsmarine, or Luftwaffe officer.
Their spiritual predecessors, the Freikorps of the post-WW1 period were also very tight-knit and highly egalitarian (again, as long as you were Germanic and an German ultra-nationalist). They were all volunteers and they chose to follow their officers out of trust; most of the Imperial German military had demobilized following the Nov. 11th 1918 armistice.
And that was that. He was fine, and they just sent his weirdo ass back to wherever he came from.

Woulda been funnier if he had set himself on fire.
The problem is, the number of these nutcases will only increase because all the actually patriotic White men are being systemically barred from joining the military.

Reading all of these comments from this guy:

I'm surprised he was willing to miss out on the upcoming Shadow of the Erd Tree DLC for this. Would it really matter if he had done this next year? Or honestly the year after next? Well, if he had waited too long the war might be over, I suppose.

I think him simply quitting would've had the same impact. He could be playing Elden Ring right now and not be complicit on genocide, according to him. Double whammy.

I would not do the same thing he did, but I understand how he got there. Volunteering for your country to kill and potentially die in a future war involves thinking something is more important than the rest of your life.

He was set to deploy to directly support operations defending Israel and decided to do what he did instead.
But the US MQ-9s. P-8s, and the like that have been circling over Gaza 24/7 for months now are just helping find the hostages!

I don't see any problem with a low level chair force member (or ANY individual in the military) talking badly about Chomo Joe on le reddit. I know you don't either, but to answer your question

"How the hell did he get under the radar" ---> because we aren't yet at the point where the surveillance state is so obsessive that they'd comb through a low level guy's reddit account to see if he's talking badly about Chomo Joe.

Tons of people in the military know that chomo joe wasn't even legitimately elected, but they want the financial benefits so they keep their mouth shut out in the open and relegate their thoughts to the Internet and private conversations with those they trust
It’s worth pointing out that often times the successful terrorists/shooters/self bbq’ers don’t advertise their plans on social media until as soon as they commit the act. See Brenton tarrant who posted his manifesto and live stream just before he was about to do the deed. Law enforcement isn’t going to have a guy on their radar if he hasn’t made a threat in the past. Even just basic political extremism on Reddit isn’t enough to warrant a visit, unless you actually say some crazy shit that could be seen as a threat.

Law enforcement is rarely preventative. Oh and don’t forget that the FBI makes terrorists lmao
