The Israeli Embassy in D.C., in 2016.

A man is in critical condition after setting himself on fire midday Sunday outside the Israeli Embassy in D.C., authorities said.

No one else was injured in the incident, which took place just before 1 p.m. in the 3500 block of International Drive NW. A video shared online, which multiple officials said appeared to be posted by the man, shows him shouting “Free Palestine” as he burned.

The man said he was an active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force. A spokeswoman for the Air Force, Ann Stefanek, said they had not yet identified the man or verified whether he is in the service.

Since the Israel-Gaza war began just over four months ago, at least 29,629 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack and says 240 soldiers have been killed since the start of its military operation in Gaza.

Hamas and allied fighters took more than 253 people hostage during the attack. More than 100 were freed in exchange for more than 200 Palestinian detainees during a November pause in fighting. Israeli authorities believe that more than 100 hostages remain in Gaza.

On Sunday, uniformed Secret Service officers responded to a report of a person experiencing a possible medical or mental health emergency, said Joe Routh, a U.S. Secret Service spokesman.

Responding officers put out the fire before D.C. firefighters arrived, around 1 p.m., fire department spokesman Vito Maggiolo said. The D.C. Fire and Emergency Services department then took the man to a hospital in life-threatening condition. He remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon.

In the video, which is just over three minutes long, one person can be heard saying, “Hi, sir, can I help you?” as the man approaches the gate to the embassy.

About 12 seconds later, as a person again asks, “Can I help you, sir,” the man lights the fire.

The man burned for about a minute and collapsed on the ground, the video showed, before law enforcement began to extinguish the fire.

I don't see any problem with a low level chair force member (or ANY individual in the military) talking badly about Chomo Joe on le reddit. I know you don't either, but to answer your question

"How the hell did he get under the radar" ---> because we aren't yet at the point where the surveillance state is so obsessive that they'd comb through a low level guy's reddit account to see if he's talking badly about Chomo Joe.

Tons of people in the military know that chomo joe wasn't even legitimately elected, but they want the financial benefits so they keep their mouth shut out in the open and relegate their thoughts to the Internet and private conversations with those they trust

Thing is, it's not just Biden (or, really, the office of the Presidency itself). It's things like saying the military shouldn't exist, America is illegitimate, snide responses to the deaths of fellow servicemembers. It's so consistent and obnoxious that you have to wonder if he restricted it to reddit, especially considering the way he went out. This guy was a True Believer; some of these posts go back 3 years, and somewhere in that account he mentions enlisting being the worst decision he ever made two years ago.

I have a feeling this is going to be memory holed for a bunch of reasons, what it says about the US military and its recruiting standards not the least of them.

EDIT:

marines doggin on him

oh man they really are; one of them linked this classic:

I'm scared shitless for my jewish frens right now.
Tbh it's all noise and no bite, guy was such a pussy that he couldn't even kill any Israelis on the way out.

His maintaining that there were no innocents on Oct 7th is hilarious though. I guess the children, Muslims, and Israeli Arabs should have done something else somehow?

I hope everyone inspired by his actions decides to emulate him, he was an hero

it would be a remarkable event if burning yourself for the sake of brownies wasnt exactly what such pale swine are designed to do.
its like expecting people to be amazed when a dog barks or a cow says 'moo.' he did what he was made for. i hope that he didnt get so toasted that his components cant be recycled

Going through his reddit account and this shit is hilarious, he got upset because he wasn't coddled and actually had to salute his superior officers instead of the officers recognizing their common humanity. He describes this as a humiliation ritual.

What an absolute shitbag. I bet he was insufferable in the work center. I can CONFIDENTLY state that the "Colonel Incident" literally never happened.

How does such an oblivious cretin even exist? The first war movie I watched was Full Metal Jacket and yeah I imagined even the chair force was going to have a Sgt. Hartman. And yes I know around the 90s they nerfed the amount of abuse they could get away with so things are a lot more polite but it's not like they ever stopped treating you like shit.
But what was he expecting the Air Force to be run like an Indie Game Studio? "They treated me like a lesser human being." 😭
stupidest man in the world.png
I'm feeling stupider by looking through post history. I'd suggest Null should move this thread to Lolcows of History. Then Null can sue for defmation when the Troons claim Kiwifarms caused him to cook himself well done.

I think that instead of that, he should get his own Lolcows of History thread, dedicated solely to himself and his internet footprint.

Most officers I've interacted with never actually gave that much of a shit about saluting. I even remember a similar scenario where my hands were full and the dude was like "Your hands are full don't worry about it!" when he saw me start to put the stuff down. What this mouthbreather somehow failed to understand is that if you treat officers like human beings, as in, giving them respect, they're not going to be an asshole to you.

I would imagine the guy was just content that you were doing as instructed. Had you just kept walking forward (or he was in a bad mood) he could have asked for your salute.

Not like my civilian ass knows anything but I'm guessing the whole saluting thing is done as assurance that you are disciplined. The whole rigmarole of memorizing your handbook and having everything in your outfit correct I think is there to see who is paying attention and who is a fuck up.

Pointing a gun to a man that self-immolated, LOL
also, interesting how you could hear the sirens the moment he lit himself:
is it a gay op? Or is it that police is at the biggest alert whan something threatens the state of Israel?
reading this thread makes me appreciate the hahas

he should’ve kneeled on his burnt neck like george floyd

That's his example of a "dehumanizing" experience that he was forced to endure? He was made to salute a superior officer under circumstances that can best be described as a minor inconvenience?

Christ, what a whiny faggot.

I'm glad he burned to death.

At the end of the day, for one reason or another every military is going to want its soldiers to do something for reasons they either won't understand or can't be told the full picture of, and do it exactly as they are told to. Keeping your uniform neat isn't necessary, but if someone's continually untidy despite strong pressure to maintain themselves 'just for decorum', can you trust them to properly maintain a tank or a piece of military equipment they don't directly appreciate the value of? Are they going to ask the full tactical details on some maneuver, even if you're trying to keep it on the down-low for tactical reasons?
