Watched the new episode and I thought for modern AVGN standard it was above average. I didn't find myself really laughing at it and I don't think it's good compared to the old ones but it's better then most recent episodes. No horrible overacting, James seems actually researched on the game in a way that feels natural, the editing is good. I can't complain.

okay episode. glad he did mention Goonies 1 was an arcade game here, but he should've elaborated a bit and said it was part of the playchoice machines.
And also thoselooooovely wallmaster-esque birds that steal your shit on the bridge in G2. Thats a classic.

Today's episode starts off with our beloved Nerd, James Rolfe.

Thanks, Justin. We all know the idea to put a Shrek medallion in the episode was yours.
Justin's enabling of Chris from stuff like this and too many games is fascinating. even the oney plays people were like "this is a shitshow" even before the mother fucking.

Looks more like a robot skull than a hand

I want to say this is the first one of the new year. Maybe?
Never played Goonies in depth. I know it had some good music.
Goonies 1 and 2 had great music, nice graphics and solid Konami programming. It's a shame that the console version of Goonies 1 only got a Japan release. It's a lot of fun.

Goonies 2 is also a lot of fun...for a while. Then it is just a long slog of backtracking and rooms that look the same. To quote Mitch Hedburg, "It's like pancakes: all exciting at first but by the end you are sick of it."

Thread tax: I am indigent because I haven't watched the slobemassacre video yet, I was going to but wanted to comment on this post first and now I am too tired and going to sleep. I'll watch it tomorrow.

i thought that was a very enjoyable episode. the "this is goonies 2" callback was b-/c+ stuff but a lot of the explanations about the 3d rooms cracked me up-- the janky computer graphics demonstrating how movement worked, james going headfirst down a ladder irl, the paper/cardboard labyrinths, etc

I wonder how long James can just pretend we dont see the flesh tundra on his head growing bigger by the episode.

Its one of those "play it in the background while gaming" episodes.

He's been doing this since ca. 2016 at least, that's when i discovered how quickly he cut if a shot shows his bald spot. He knows perfectly well but his autism probably goes "But muh character... he has hair!!" but luckily he dropped the hairplugs atleast, those were (not) the days.

Jack had a pretty good assessment of the movie.

I consider the AVGN movie to be the worst movie I've ever seen because it's the only movie where it left me genuinely pissed off for wasting my time. I'm not a person who'll just watch bad movies for irony's sake, so I really don't even like watching stuff like Neil Breen's films, but at least they've got some outline of an idea going for them. And like, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, another one I consider the worst, at least had some impressive fight choreography. I'm really stretching with those movies, they're all awful and a waste of time, but they didn't just wind up pissing me off like AVGN did.

None of the characters were consistent. Every attempt at humor fell flat. No one had any chemistry with anyone. The smug black sidekick was really unlikeable and they make him fall in love with the white girl right at the end because April Rolfe is a racist nutcase. There wasn't a single redeeming quality to that trash at all. It is impressively despicable.

This July marks the 10th anniversary of that movie launching. Remember how new episodes became scant for several years leading up to it? And then afterwards, the quality was noticeably down? The show never recovered.
