I've heard that the federal prisons in Alberta are a lot like prisons in burgerland. Fights are only common if you actually antagonize people, though. CO's are corrupt as fuck, but they won't let you fight people unless it's a chomo ("goof" in Canadian slang), in which they will let you deal damage to the goof before they actually come to send him to the medical center. They are more of a "I'll sneak in a phone if you do X to that goof over there or you pay enough money or ramen".

Getting actually assraped in a Canadian prison seems to be rare from stats, but you never know how biased the CO's might be against or for trans inmates. Alberta is the least PC place in Canada. You are essentially entering the reddest state if we are comparing policies between Republicans and Conservatives in Canada.
