The biggest problem I've noticed with western animation since Avatar is that none of it seems to be made for kids anymore.

I mean Steven Universe and the other lol-so-random type of shows feel like they are made for adult autists and fetishists and not actually children.

At the end of the day, Last Airbender was a kids show. A fantastic kids show, but a kids show nonetheless. Maybe we should go back to making stuff for kids.

Avatar, Watchmen, Last of Us, all of these are examples of properties that unfortunately had the effect of "Legitimizing" the hobby they were made for. Avatar was the one good kids show so now adults can use that to normalize not moving on from anything else. However these things were only acclaimed in contrast to mediums that typically dont tell stories all that well. SO now you have the worst of both worlds: writing trying to be deep done by people who are really bad at it or lower quality works trying to go back to the roots. You never just get a straight story that isnt trying to get some of that residual acclaim

Steven Universe especially feels like that because in the latter half of the show, it has gotten so far outside the realm of what children deal with that it's clearly just 30+ year old men, women and trannies crying about how hard their lives are. If you told me an actual child understood the metaphors in the final season, let alone enjoyed I'll call you a liar.

Amphibia was cool though, that was a step in the right direction. Still a lot of obvious self insertion by the writer every now and again.

We could move past it if western animators could actually make another show as good as it.
Pretty much. I'll be fair that I haven't kept up much with the animation scene for years, but I swear almost nothing after Avatar that is an action oriented show that isn't beanmouth based. The stuff that comes out with more human proportions is either adult oriented rehashing of old franchices, I can't really think of a He-Man or GI Joe equivalent of any sort.

That's another issue, in bean mouth land, most of it is very unsubtle degeneracy. Adventure Time and Steven Universe started for kids but they started huffing their own farts hard and abandoned that. I'd say Gravity Falls was a good time and for the most part very apt for kids and I have paid zero attention to the Owl House and Amphibia which seem to be some of the more famous out there, though not sure how much they ignore children to chase the coveted manchild demographic.

We could do something for adults but what hasn't been explored already? I thought about what would happen if they found someone ultra apathetic that had bending powers ( possibly the avatar ) and the show is about them trying to get them to care. It ended up being the guy playing with titties like duke nukem but it's something.

It's kind of funny how we're supposed to be getting a new series in 2025 and we still haven't seen or heard anything from the actual studio. Maybe they don't want to overshadow the Netflix show, given it's technically a success (in the way they care about).

By what metric? Because I have heard no one talk about this thing in anyway positive. Its pretty much all negative and I honestly am not hearing a lot about it period.

The usual social media places. Youtube, Twitter etc. I see more of it than I'd like honestly.

Well I think they rock! :p

I don't know if I could watch another series of it, I've been rewatching the OG and I cannot understate how much better/relatable all the characters are compared to Korras series and how much more powerful the character arcs are.

That said I never got on with the Korra settings either, I understand they age tech to show the passage of time, but it took away a lot of the magic and otherworldlyness for me.

I genuinely didn't mind it before the rewatch, but it's cemented how far the stories have gotten away from its origin.

Next avatar will be the greatgreatgrandson of cabbage merchant.
Catchphrase: "hold my cabbages ...!", at least twice each episodes, and establishes awesome new form of cabbage-bending.
Dark secret: does not like cabbages!!
Plot: save Cabbage City from [insert evil overlord stereotype].
Two seasons, then cancelled by Netflix. Great success.

As much as I enjoyed ATLA back in the days, I really don't think there is that much of an audience for an avatar serialized universe out there. They should just make a completely original series and promote it as the "spiritual ATLA sequel" or something.

If a new Avatar isn't your thing, a film featuring the adult versions of the original cast is also due out next year.

Oh now I'm back on board, thank you friend! They look goddamn awesome. First rate art, it really is. I will give the Korra team that though, they aged everyone up beautifully and wrote their parts with all the love and respect I could have hoped for.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but weren't the LoK settings in a more industrial area because the writer or director was absolutely adamant on the setting taking place during the in-universe's equivalent of an industrial revolution, just because he liked the steampunk aesthetic?

I also wasn't sure about the whole "lightning-benders are so common and are hired specifically to generate the city's energy" thing, seeing as the original series depicted it as an advanced firebending technique that very few people master.

I also watched a bit of the Netflix series, and I've got to say that Zhao's actor was one of the few bright spots so far. Most of the child actors ranged from mediocre to tolerable. I didn't like how the plot is moved along because
Team Avatar stole Zuko's journal and constantly reference it to see where to go next. It ruins the feeling that you're on a journey with the gang and are learning and experiencing the world with them.

I think the biggest problem is that Korra. Kyoshi and the Aang comics have tackled all the problems an Avatar could face, even a "modern" one. At this point, the most interesting thing you could do is have an Avatar whose actually a POS or a despot. Kinda like Star Wars Legacy focusing on Cade Skywalker to juxtapose his super heroic ancestor Luke.

I really don't understand the mindset that ATLA brand has any level of quality at all anymore given that the only good product in it was the original TV show that was made more than a decade ago.

Korra, the comics and every other product with its name on it has been at best mediocre, but on average dumpster trashfires in terms of quality. Its like a car company that made a great vehicle 10 years ago, but then made nothing but steaming piles of barely operable junk with the same name for the next 10 years and then that same company is expecting you to be excited for next years model to come out. It just doesn't make any sense in my mind..
