I think it's a very big part of it. Her Dahmer fanfiction is her trying to figure out how to make a gay man love her. She's retconned him as being perfectly okay with trans men, and she's also trying to make herself fit the part with bottom surgery.

She does always want to be different, and god knows she's obsessed with everyone's genitals, including her own. I don't know that any one thing has lead to her decision to seek surgery, but the Dahmer thing is a big part of it.
