I pointed out in another thread about how the Japanese have been creating a range of diverse characters since the dawn of time of all walks of life and other some real pearl clutchers out there no one complained.

The difference from what they do and what the western writers do is actually write good and memorable characters.

Barrett Wallace in FF7? Leroy Smith and Raven in Tekken? Awesome. Any black characters made the past decade over here? Fuck if I know any of them.

I think what helps is that these surface level traits aren't the defining characteristics of these characters.

That's been a huge problem for these morons for ages, they don't understand that if the characters were actually written worth a shit no one other than a tiny fraction(who would complain no matter what), would give a fuck. Instead we get shitty people who cannot describe themselves without delving into the pool of identity politics tags, so it isn't any wonder they can't write fictional characters without doing that either. That's not to say there aren't stories where it actually matters if a character is black/gay/alien/whatever, but 99% of the time it wouldn't make a difference and the end product would be better for it.
