I pointed out in another thread about how the Japanese have been creating a range of diverse characters since the dawn of time of all walks of life and other some real pearl clutchers out there no one complained.I can pretty much guarantee you with actually good writing far less people would have an issue with niggers/women/whatever in their media (see ripley, blade, etc.).
The difference from what they do and what the western writers do is actually write good and memorable characters.
Barrett Wallace in FF7? Leroy Smith and Raven in Tekken? Awesome. Any black characters made the past decade over here? Fuck if I know any of them.
Even when it comes to LGBTwhatever stuff, even that's done better. From Venom in Guilty Gear to Jun in Persona 2.
I think what helps is that these surface level traits aren't the defining characteristics of these characters.
Barrett is more than just a "Black" dude; I can describe him without needing to even bring up his skin color.
