At it's core, GG is easy to understand. Game journos got caught fucking the subject of their articles. There was widespread censorship of the internet to bury the story (which was unheard of at the time). A decade of reeing about it followed.

From there it's a lot of deep, convoluted rabbit holes. I think a lot of people bringing up GamerGate 2.0 in relation to the current Sweet Baby Inc stuff is that not only is it the same people involved, but similar tactics are being employed. There's even the same kind of deep lore rabbit holes (Baby Ghosts, legobutts).

I think it's worth noting that "real" Gamergate didn't start when a floozy slept with a journalist, it started when that journalist's friends and colleagues banned discussion of it. I remember the night of the Zoe post, and a few days afterward, commenters on various gaming sites and forums being like, "Woah, this seems like a scandal. Shouldn't we talk about it?" and the people who ran those sites responded with a firm "NO" and banned anyone who did. Gamergate was one big Streisand Effect.

I honestly think that if gaming sites would have let the discussion run its course, it would have tarnished Zoe, Grayson, and the rest of the "Five Guys", but then it would have died down. The fact that they circled the wagons and colluded and tried to sweep it under the rug was what made people think maybe it was an industry-wide problem.

I think Hell has expanded or reorganized since then. Not that the classics are bad. I personally enjoy the level of hell so horrible to describe, you'd probably die from fright trying to explain it or from reading about it. I also enjoy how in some religions, examinations of your sins in the afterlife are done court of law style, and if you refuse to explain your sins, the judge of the dead rips out your heart and shows it to the audience to know what sins you committed. You're right but there's a critical difference here: The Gamespot Kane and Lynch 'incident' was basically what everyone expected: big publishers throwing around their marketing bucks for good scores.

The idea that the indies were doing the same thing for clout, poon or (now) n-word passes was new. There was thought especially post-Gamespot that indie was 'cleaner' somehow.
