I don’t think you could have used a worse example to contrast.
Palahniuk was paid well and signed a contract to allow his debut novel to be adapted. Fincher was such a fan of the book he tried to buy the rights himself but got outbid by Fox so then lobbied to direct it. So author was well paid, got “based on the book by Chuck Palahnuik” on marketing materials and the director doing his very best because he was a big admirer of the author and book. After the movie was released it was tied in with a huge new paperback reprint of the book that sold very, very, well, plus audio books and huge trade orders for libraries. Oh and the movie was a massive, massive success that cemented a writing career for Chuck. It’s like the very best case scenario for an author’s boom adaptation into a visual medium.
The guy whose article IH ripped off got the satisfaction of a YT copyright strike and then much later HB spotlighting the theft in his video. I can’t even remember the guy’s name ffs.
The white knighting and defense of IH plagiarism on KF is disheartening and hypocritical. It reminds me of all the Somerton fans who got so assblasted when a few authors pointed out that Jimmy was plagiarizing their work. Sommerton kept chugging along so well because morons were ready with pitchforks at any hint of valid criticism from writers he was stealing from. Even in the original HB video a few asked their names not be mentioned, or as little as possible because they still feared dealing with these assholes carrying a torch for JS.
It’s great if you like IH and enjoy his content, but it doesn’t mean he’s a saint and the wrong/shitty things he does deserve defending or excusing. I’m sure if some Pajeet took an IH video and mildly altered 10% of its script and then uploaded with AI voice IH fans would be pissed.
IH fucked up. He shouldn’t have used another writer’s entire article, verbatim in many parts, for his video without permission. The ironic part is I’m sure if IH approached the author and, “hey love this article. I want to do a video with it and I’ll give you a % of the ad revenue if you give me permission” The author would have jumped at the chance, even with a tiny % of revenue sharing.
Same really goes for JS. Most of his plagiarized authors would have loved having their work included in a big YT video and probably would have allowed it for exposure value alone, no $$ needed. Many writers will allow this because the exposure for their work can be more valuable than a few hundred bucks.
Anyway. IH doesn’t appear to be a serial plagiarist or rely on stealing content from others. Someone just pointing out the fact he ripped off an entire article for a video isn’t that big of a deal. I think IH fans created a Streisand effect. I didn’t bother to watch the entire HB video until two days ago. From all the teeth gnashing here I thought it was going to be mostly a vicious lefty trying to destroy IH with flimsy accusations. Instead it was just a few minutes of the video pointing out a rock solid example of plagiarism IH committed before quickly moving on to a total gutting of a lefty queer plagiarist for more than two hours.
Thanks to the IH fans meltdown here I didn’t even know JS was part of this video but it’s actually what the entire video is really about. The IH and MLM bitch are just a bit of window dressing so it doesn’t look like a direct solo attack on JS, a bit of “others are naughty too” content until he gets to the real point. Evisceration of Sommerton for building an entire channel on lazy content theft from other gays.
