Trans Joker Movie The People’s Joker Being Released Despite Warner Bros.’ Copyright Objections

Vera Drew’s trans parody movie The People’s Joker will soon begin screening in theaters across the U.S., despite earlier objections from Warner Bros. Discovery over copyright infringement.

The explosive, do-it-yourself, autobiographical, queer work of art reimagines the Joker’s origin, starring Drew — the director, editor, and co-writer — as a closeted trans woman who moves to Gotham City to become a stand up comedian.

Now the film — which features versions of The Joker and other characters from Warner Bros.’ DC Films, including Batman, is expanding to more than 20 cities across the country, including a run at several Alamo Drafthouses between April 19-25.

What Happened Between Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker and Warner Bros.?

The conflict between The People’s Joker and Warner Bros. began at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, when the film was pulled following its premiere screening over “rights issues,” TIFF said at the time.

Drew had originally expected Warner Bros. to “just quietly ignore us and rest comfortably knowing that nobody’s going to ever confuse our movie with a DC property, or think that we’re trying to replace their brand,” she told the Los Angeles Times.

But the night before that premiere screening, Drew received a cease and desist letter from Warner Bros. Discovery, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Warner Bros. argued copyright infringement, but Drew maintains that the film is protected under fair-use laws. The premiere screening took place as planned, but further TIFF screenings were cancelled and Drew pulled the movie from other planned festival showings.

The People’s Joker have been in touch with WB and, based on those conversations, we’re all extremely hopeful and optimistic that there won’t be any issue with the film’s release,” publicists for the film told MovieMaker. “Also, we should add, there wasn’t ever an actual hard cease and desist — that was something that grew out of proportion on the press cycle back then.”

“I have no clue how today goes and my team wants me to say nothing of course so I’ll stay vague,” Drew tweeted at the time. “But whatever happens in the next few hours, I want you to know… if you’ve been waiting and aching to watch our movie, ur going to get to soon. Stay tuned and stay with me. Need ur help.”

She continued to push for the film to be released, and in December, indie distributor Altered Innocence, which specializes in LGBTQ+ and coming-of-age films, announced that it would screen nationwide starting in New York City at IFC Center on April 5. (Screening details are on the company’s website.)

Representatives for Warner Bros. Discovery did not immediately respond to MovieMaker‘s request for comment Tuesday.

Drew has a rich background in comedy, having edited An Evening With Tim Heidecker, I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson, and Comedy Bang! Bang!. She co-wrote, edited, and executive produced Tim and Eric’s Beef House, directed Adult Swim’s Our Bodies and I Love David, and the the 12th season of On Cinema at the Cinema. She also earned an Emmy nomination for editing Showtime’s Who Is America?

Heidecker appears in The People’s Jokeralong with other well-known comedians including Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Maria Bamford (Big Mouth), and Scott Aukerman (Between Two Ferns). Other notable cast include Lynn Downey (Daisy Jones & The Six), Nathan Faustyn (Saddled), and newcomer Kane Distler.

Altered Innocence’s site promises that The People’s Joker also includes “vats of feminizing chemicals, sexy cartoon interludes, scarecrow psychiatrists, CGI Lorne Michaels, and psychedelic gender dysphoria all play supporting roles.”

In order to make The People’s Joker, Drew says, she crowdsourced help from 200 other creators, most of whom were also queer. The entire film was shot on green screen, and includes 2D, 3D, spot-motion, and other forms of animation.

The People’s Joker is produced by Joey Lyons (John Early: Now More Than Ever) and executive produced by Richie Doyle (Dad & Step-Dad), Conor Hannon (Dear Mama), and Riccardo Maddalosso (Armageddon Time, How to Blow Up a Pipeline).

The movie was co-written by Brie LeRose. Nate Cornett served as cinematographer with production design by Noah Stijl, Rosie Sanders, Maggie Forest, Courtney McIntosh, Amy Smoot, Yesenia Rego, Shannon Pollak, Cory Porter, AT Pratt, and Ashley Brown. The score was compsed by Justin Krol & Quinn Scharber, Ember Knight, Danni Rowan, and electronic composer Elias and the Error.

Does anyone actually "know" any of these people besides maybe Odinkirk? I don't think comedians are as popular or "well known" as they think they are.

Alamo Drafthouse is a troon-infested shithole that charges $20 for hipster-grade bullshit like a mid burger with "lemon-garlic aioli" (read: fucking mayonnaise) or popcorn with "real clarified butter" (read: fucking melted butter). they're also based in Austin, one of the most powerfully cursed hipster shitholes in the country, but also have locations all over the country in other wonderful garbage piles like LA and Brooklyn. enjoy this picture without context:

Alamo Drafthouse shows bullshit like this on the reg to try and draw in marks that will drop upwards of $60 on a single check for their "award-winning cuisine" (bonus stickers for you if you can dig up any awards their food has actually won). so the fact that they're distributing some trashy youtube-quality troon movie is nothing new for this outfit. also, fucking nobody watches this shit anyway. people go to Alamo Drafthouse to see capeshit.

Drew had originally expected Warner Bros. to “just quietly ignore us and rest comfortably knowing that nobody’s going to ever confuse our movie with a DC property, or think that we’re trying to replace their brand,” she told the Los Angeles Times.

yeah, bullshit. if you didn't want attention you wouldn't be copping one of the most popular modern pop culture figures to make a big dramatic stage show about your fucking fetish. this is his best-case scenario, WB's big scary legal division making noise about his stupid dumpster film, because now he gets to play the innocent victim who's just trying to celebrate queer culture in this hateful country that's so viciously opposed to alternate sexuality. fag.

Yeah, I doubt it's really for the people.
In that sense, you could see the name of this shitty troon movie as an attempt to regain that symbolic cred.
That new commie Joker movie and the older Joker movie can be seen as reflecting the decay of Clown World. First there's a movie that could be seen as a guy rebelling against -- yet still reflecting -- Clown World. Now there's one about a clown who "is" Clown World.

I used to love the Drafthouse. It's a shame to see what it's become, especially with the troon pandering. They used to have a sense of humor and would show wild and crazy exploitation films. When did they turn into whatever the hell that orientation picture is? I guess they won't be doing stuff like this anymore for movies like Inglorious Basterds:

I personally noticed an uptick post-COVID, could be due to a mass staff change. most COVID-affected businesses that didn't die still had to massively downsize and then gradually rebuild their operation. here's another thing to enjoy without context: Queer Film Theory 101 at Alamo Drafthouse

A semi-educational crash course on the queer subtext of your favorite films.

Queer Film Theory 101 at Alamo Drafthouse takes an in-depth look at the queerest “straight” films ever produced. We’re outing all of your favorite films! Is TITANIC a genderqueer love story? Yeah! Does POINT BREAK explore latent homosexuality in extreme sports culture? Absolutely. Is JAWS about the violent fear of queer desire? Yes, yes, and we’ll tell you why. To this day, there are so few representations of LGBTQ+ people in film, so we improvise, we read between the lines, we make adjustments to our head cannon, and zero in on all the queer subtext available. Join us every month for a new entry in our screening and lecture series. Hosted and curated by Micheal Foulk.

this is Micheal (no that's not a typo) Foulk:

more about the "Queer Film Theory 101" thing:

Queer Film Theory 101 is a film and comedy lecture series focused on dissecting heteronormative films of our youths and pointing out the hidden queer narratives. Basically, we ruin films for straight people and yell about the characters that made us feel gay. It's fun!

basically, we take the hard work of accomplished artists and intentionally misinterpret it until we can make it all about our stupid sexual identities we're using to compensate for our gaping void of personality. it's fun! take that, cishets!

What is it with these types latching onto film? I've seen it a lot in the cult/exploitation/horror film scenes..

this might be me talking out of my ass here, but IMO film is a perfect conflux of being popular, easy to engage with, and also easy to put on fartistic airs with. being a film fag requires nothing more than sitting down for a couple hours and allowing colors and sound to stream into your brain unfiltered. there's no interactivity (as with a game), no need to engage your own creative impulse (as with a book), no need to interpret the abstract (as with music). that's not to say that film isn't capable of those things, but you can watch the vast majority of movies in existence without them, while also claiming some kind of erudition simply because you've done it a bunch. staring at a screen is as inevitable in our society as breathing, so it's natural that low-effort midwit narcissists would coagulate at this point, the lowest cultural water line.

I heard it’s only 41 minutes long so is it even a movie at that point?

They showed this on Pop Culture Crisis today. Looks like the kind of movie where you wish you hadn't had those edibles before watching it and your friend tells you they were just regular brownies.
Considering your forum avatar, I'd say this checks out.

Also, this whole thing is fake, gay, and diseased, but covered by fair use, so fuck WB.

Ooof, bad fan-fiction is like the tranny opium, they can't create something so they poorly emulate something people already like, sounds like a metaphor to me. This Movie is trying to capitalize on something that peaked 5 years ago. Where's that picture of Brianna Wu as the Joker? I keep searching for it and cannot find it.

Anyone notice "young Joker" looks suspiciously like Lucas Roberts? Untitled (4).jpg

I'm sober as a judge these days but things like The People's Joker make me feel like I'm still partaking.

Unless this is a redo of the movie, this is not it's first theatrical run. Last year, they were touring this movie around North American film festivals as a secret screening; I know this because I was at one of those screenings.

You can very much tell that it's made by Tim and Eric/Abso Lutely alum; the editing (and David Liebe Hart) gives it away. Maria Bamford as a CGI Lorne Michaels is slightly amusing, as is the FtM Jared Leto Joker and the associated rant by Tranny Phoenix about how T4T relationships are so special over a poorly animated love scene. It slightly stuck with me, possibly because it was played at the exact screen that has been doing monthly RHPS screenings for the last 45 years and because I got flashbanged with the fucker, but... not a good movie.

This looks so fucking bad and funny and I hope WB doesn't pursue any legal action because they're retarded cucks who have already sworn fealty to the woke religion.

Oh I get it, the people's joker, because Gotham's joker disgusts Gotham.

Bob Odenkirk has the worst taste in movie roles, it's actually pretty amazing how consistently he lands parts in the absolute shittiest movies imaginable.
i recall that Odenkirk is a funnyman from the 90s, so maybe he thinks this is too funny to pass up.

Tim? Its free real estate tim?
It makes sense he’s in it too if Odenkirk is. Odenkirk discovered Tim and Eric.
