I used to be like you, the libertarian hippy-dippy "just let people do what they want, maaaaan." Over the years I've realized just how asinine and braindead it is. Let me just touch on two points.

Great post. I've been on something of a journey to outside of the box I've been born into. The "live and let live" conflict-avoidant "to each their own" mindset is very ingrained in the base assumptions of my own mind. Every time I catch one of those and apply scrutiny, it quickly dissolves, leaving a trail of "how could I not see this before?". The more things I see and arrange into a coherent whole, the more I want to talk about with people - but I quickly realized that almost nobody has the base mechanisms in place to consider arguments, make decisions and stick through implementing them into reality.

"You do you" is a very easy stance to take, it doesn't require you to do any legwork, you don't need to have a positive proposition of your own, you don't even have to assert your own behavior as the best or even good, and it doesn't require you to enter into conflict with any other person until they start it. When they do, you can simply use "live and let live bro" to dismiss it. The truth is, none of us live by or for ourselves. The number of people with the revealed preference of living truly outside of society is very, very low. Much higher however is the number of people who will gladly indulge in and rely on plenty of achievements of society, while also demanding to be treated as an individual whose actions the group shouldn't be concerned with.

I like the Christian understanding of freedom: "freedom from sin/the ability to do good". Ingrained within that is control over yourself, improvement based on sound judgement, where the source of values and direction comes from outside oneself. The worldly "freedom" this is contrasted with is the freedom to engage with any pleasurable vice you want, which makes you a slave of your passions, of substances, of whatever provides you with the pleasure you are driven by. None of this can be mandated from the top down, it cannot be ordered at gunpoint, it is something each man needs to discover, learn and personally take up. This being seemingly lost and forgotten makes me both sad and angry.

Absolutely. Transness steps into the realm of body integrity identity disorder. They feel the “cure” for their deep discomfort with the body part(s) is to have it amputated. It is, of course, incredibly frowned upon to allow them this solution. Sufferers try to guilt the docs by saying they’ll cut it off themselves lol.

As has been said already, our bodies may be ours but purposefully mutilating and destroying your body is considered a serious mental health issue and treatment is recommended or forced. An addict will want to keep consuming. An anorexic will want to keep starving. A self harmer will want to keep cutting. But we don’t affirm their beliefs and encourage the behaviours because that’s stupid and harmful and the general public don’t want to see a pitiful human die as a result of their reckless behaviour. Survival and protecting our species is an instinct, think of what happens when an old lady falls in the street.
