The funny thing is, Marlene isn't even his kid. It's Dyne's. Barret took her in after Dyne went insane over the reactor exploded (and Shinra essentially blamed the town for being terrorist sympathizers). Barret's entire characterization and motivation is a lot deeper than people give the writers for the original FFVII for. It's incredibly sad that the first thought these people have when they see Barret is, "OH MY GOD, A BLACK MAN IN A JAPANESE GAME! REPRESENTATION IS NECESSARY!"

I’d even say Barrett is one of the most likable, sympathetic, and well written characters in FFVII. It’s a shame wokies only see him as the necessary minority character.
