Poll: Do you want sticker notifications back? - Not the score, just the notifications.

Should sticker notifications be brought back?

So instead of 10 other apes asking the same question as you, they can hit the like/agree whatever button.
What did you think they were for? A running score and nothing else? lol
What I'm saying is why the fuck even have stickers if they won't give you notifications, although I guess that kind of works too.

I've been autistically reading the thread but didn't write until now. I've been hit a few times with some moderation on site, followed with some nasty comments by a mod (presumably Null), for pretty inane and unwritten rules.

The first was for putting two images in the same line. They were presented side by side because I was making a comparison, and I was on mobile and didn't want to figure out how to slam them together into one image on the phone. The snide comment was something to the effect of, "You've been here almost 5 years and learn how to do separate lines for image". I actually screen capped it and asked in the forum discussion about other unwritten rules:
Are there house rules for how a kiwi ought to format one's posts? I got this lovely notice:
1691761472492.png

The post in question had two images on the same line, with a space in between them. I guess instead of a line break? Which is what the editor did. Now, I know I've seen in-line images in other areas on the forum. But hey, I can learn, even 4 years and 1+ month later.

Are there any other house rules for posting on Kiwi I should know about? The big ones I'm aware of are the use of spoilers for walls of autism, and the use of private spoilers, in particular for content that ought not be indexed.

What else should be a knuckle dragger like me be aware of?
If this is so precious to the flow of the site, an ooperator could add "clear:both;" to the css for img tags in a forum post, and it would functionally do the same thing, automatically. With no added burden to the site. Maybe that would require changing how custom emoji work, or maybe some more code for them. Whatever. I got some fun responses and, after a time, forgot about it. Until now.

The second incident, I quoted the entirety of the infamous Rekieta got catfished post, in the LOLcow of the year thread, as evidence that hey, here's why Rackets deserves it. Since I quoted, only the top bit was visible, and the link is automatically embedded to go to the original post. Within minutes, my post was deleted, and I had a nasty janny note stating how audacious I was to quote a full and lengthy post (which you can do, in spite of the reply feature disabling that in thread for long posts), and ending with a note to the effect that I should kill myself.

I thought that a bit excessive.

What's the one feature that I see users not able to figure out on the regular? Why does reply not work? (For long posts.) Is this another autistic, "You have to quote to reply in thread, but also don't do too much?" I'm starting to wonder. I don't know if there's a technical reason for this (I haven't touched a community backend in ages, maybe it shits up the database). I don't know if it's an SEO thing (they do not like repeated content I know). I don't know if it's just a, "I can't deal with too long of hidden, nested text." Whatever, I decided.

Since I am writing this post, and to the best of my knowledge I am neither immortal nor an AI, I opted not to take the janny's (presumably Null's) advice. It did cool me off of posting for a day or two, but it was the holidays and I was touching grass more than usual anyway. It also put me in the mindset that hey, maybe not all is well in kiwi land. I decided instead of walking away, just to enjoy my kiwi friends and ignore the simmering.

I can see why people were annoyed about the DM chains. I know I disliked hitting the 3-5 clicks to get out of them. Now, that some of those idiotas were complaining about stickers, of all things? And since Null doesn't want to be tagged, I've unlinked this quote of his upthread:
because they do not feel safe
Safe? On the Internet? This is bonkers. Some faggots don't feel safe, or they feel brigaded? Oh boo, hoo. As others have put it, <ItsTheInternetJustLogOff_Meme.png> Especially ironic given, at least the jannies, if not the ooperator, apparently feel it necessary to be assholes on things that really, aren't that big a deal. So rather than dealing with the faggots in weird DM threads and the idiots whining (and triggering) sticker wars, nah let's just change a loosely connected feature, because clearly it's the entire of community that is wrong.

I get it, with a hundred active bans in this ban period that have this abused sticker flag on, it's an annoying issue for admins to deal with. But the issue is you're treating the symptoms (users crying about stickers and getting notfications about them) rather than the cause (whiny, attention seeking faggot users).

Speaking of, it's notable that how some duck dick riders disappear from this thread as soon as dear feeder publicly bails.

To me the concept of sticker farming reads as "People will attempt to make posts that maximize value and enjoyment for the reader". I fail to see how this is a bad thing, even for the extreme minority of retards that care about the imaginary points.

Call me retarded, but while doing so please explain how a minority of people attempting to post exclusively "high-value" posts is a negative thing for the website.
Maybe I'm a unicorn or whatever, but I enjoyed the score. I was actively trying to improve my score/post ratio by increasing the quality of my posts, and trying to branch out a bit. I was specifically doing write ups of low traffic threads with info- for example, the Vickers post on the latest MatI was thanks to great research in that thread, but my post in Community Happenings somehow was what was shown on screen. I'm glad to shine a light on whatever is going on up there in NorCal, it otherwise might have been a largely overlooked bit of Guntaverse lore.

I would regularly dive through user profiles to see scores. It allowed me to quickly decide if someone was worth my time or if I should just keep scrolling. Heck, I even decided to follow a few people because I was impressed by their score. But I can see some morons gaming the system for updoots. Any karmic system is going to have avenues for abuse, but who cares? If we move from scores, the present system is ok in principle (positive/negative, although the only neg I can think of off-hand is loopy Luna in Escondido), but I would prefer more granular named levels, from best to worst, maybe as a ratio to posts, rather than pure +/- sum. Say naming it something like:
  1. AnOminous
  2. AltisticRight
  3. HHH (maybe too high, and would be unworthy if he in part caused this shit storm)
  4. Dyn
  5. Lidl Drip
Tearing out the sticker notifications, followed up by the random numbering of scores on user pages, is just spiteful. I would say, "Hey, what do the analytics say?" but oh right- the admin doesn't run (many?) analytics. Now I'm sure Google would refuse service at some point, but there are local analytics options, of varying levels of use. But gosh, some data-based decisions sure would be useful if determining that hey, "Maybe I like to do things x way, but the users, and a lot of them, are doing y. Wonder why that is? Maybe we can figure out a better way to use the forums if we dive into it! Maybe even find a better work flow that would improve user interaction!"

But no, it's probably better to just rip out a useful feature for at least 760, presumably active, users enjoy- a feature which they enjoy enough to track down a thread about it, vote in thread, and maybe even write about. Doing this in the name of the ooperator (and jannies?), who are annoyed at faggots being whiny and abusing the report system, all in the name of "Muh safety".

I remember SA when the troons won, and I remember what it was like before a user class was elevated. I remember when lowtax told his old fans to (repeatedly) fuck off. This feels a lot like that SA decline (although that was years of neglect leading up to it, so maybe more accurate to call it the first crack in the wall). I know there's a history of these kind of things happening on the Farms, and maybe things will roll back, as some have in the past.

Some people's inability to cope should not impact the use case and ability of others to enjoy things as they were. It's exceptionally hypocritical to crow about "muh safety", when mods have told at least one user to kill themselves. Presumably where it has happened once, it has happened several times.

You're asking the same question and expecting a different answer. There's nothing else to it, that's why this thread is so amusing.
My retarded ESL brain is not working at these hours so I'll just accept whatever you say. I didn't care about the score, I just liked the handy system for notifications, especially since I hop around threads a lot.

I respect HHH's autism a lot, he's a much needed sort of memento mori for people's opinions.

Having gone without them for just a day, I'd prefer to keep the notifications because I comment in slow threads or randomly sometimes, and I can at least see from the homepage when the random Kanye West comment I made 2 months ago got read and go back and catch up. The score was dumb and gay. I lost my trophy though and that made me feel special.

Bringing up comparisons to SA is interesting. Null may not have earned and lost a fortune but having an autistic shitfit over a few users who should've banned months ago and fucking over the rest of the site's users definitely brings Lowtax's many antics over the years to mind.

Null does an insane amount of work improving this site. Imagine finding out nobody used or even knew about any of it because we were all in the fucking special sticker club :)
I am not saying thats what happened but holy shit can I relate

I think most of this thread can be summed up with “well I personally don’t like the the stickers, I’ve been doing fine without them for years. Why aren’t you functioning right, why can’t you just be me.”

I would regularly dive through user profiles to see scores. It allowed me to quickly decide if someone was worth my time or if I should just keep scrolling. It's a legit great idea to have points/posts as a metric over the binary positive and negative. It differentiate great users from the barely tolerated users.

Reaction scores made me a better user. That's an objective fact.
"I want to see my reaction score."
You can't. reddit still does.

I determined that the ongoing tally of your score is bad for the community. The score itself is meaningless. The values of reaction scores are arbitrary. Reactions are seldom used correctly. Examples: "Lunacy" is negative, and is meant for posts which themselves are insane, but are often applied to posts which link to insane content. We have a score literally called "Islamic Content" which has no meaning and is a -1 point; it is often applied to any post which references Islam. It is a 10-year-old joke and absolutely does not reflect the value of a post.

"Why were they disabled?"
The instant feedback negatively impacted the site. It provoked strong emotional reactions, caused infighting, and prompted behaviors which are detrimental to the community. It trained end users to operate the site in a way which discouraged casual conversation, promoted clique behavior, and disincentivized exploring the site to find less active threads to make more active. It also encouraged users to post very low effort messages to farm reactions for alerts as a dopamine reward, such as going to featured threads and making the most surface level observations as quickly as possible. See this post for more details about the very long history in which staff have had to deal with drama.
1) It's easy to shit on reddit but you might be surprised that reddit used to be GOOD. Kiwifarms is a much more linear experience than Reddit, negrates don't affect the placement of posts and that's actually a great thing.. Also a bad thing: spontaneous posts. Time is limited and you'll likely only scroll the first few pages so that's why people make low effort messages. There's little fault to stickers/alerts.
2) Scores are not "meaningless." They indicate whether a user has a history of making posts worthy of reactions. You might think this is stupid, but knowing that your post is read, understood and promptly reacted to is what makes socializing on this site enjoyable to many. If you don't need it, that's probably because you're a fucking admin with a ready legion of dick riders and not some nobody newfag.
3) Reactions that are used incorrectly should be made clear or changed to suit how the community uses them. Making stickers reflect the value of a post is NOT A BAD THING. Throwing away a feature instead of tweaking and utilizing it is such a waste. Update stickers to reflect their value and use, like making lunacy or islamic neutral. Why not increase the value of informative posts over simple reactions like "agree?" There's nothing stopping you from social engineering users to encourage posts that you want to see.

edit: grammar = ass

so serious question here but sticker notifications were able to be turned off originally yes? so would the solution to this issue not be to just make the sticker notifications disabled by default so only the people who want them will bother to turn them back on.

as far as the points however why not just make it so the scores are only visible to you and nobody else. would that not solve the issue or am i missing something important with all this?

It would, it would even work the other way where that’s default and then you have to turn it off (like it used to be)

Null just got into a mass fight with a lot of people and even booting some off the site so I don’t think he wants just to say “fine have it back” whatever reasons that may be (out of spite or for some undisclosed reason)

From what I read it seems its a mixture of some retarded faggots doing DM chain bullshit (since when does this site cave to what a few queers do?), some unused site features, and some belief that the stickers feature is too reddit-y. I've been wondering about that last one for a long while, and I'm very ambivalent about whether it's a good or bad thing, and/or if the resemblance is just superficial.

If the ignored functionality was faster, more efficient, or more informative, he would earn a ❤️ . But it isn't, so he's 🎩
