The Linux Thread - The Autist's OS of Choice

Not going to happen. Above all they want it to be compatible with the Linux ecosystem (The Embrace portion of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish), and that means it'll be systemd based. And once they've made it systemd-based, they won't really be able to go away from it, because systemd is really nice to manage and any alternative will be grognard garbage ripped out of 90s BSD code, because the Linux community are people who want something that just works on one side (and these people are all Team Systemd), or angry nerds nobody cares about, who are only content when their script-based init requires a two week debugging session every update and their hate-mail campaign succeeded in getting the developers of their favourite tiling WM to drop the plan to implement mouse support. And if Microsoft do go full Extend and make NTinit or whatever to compete directly with Red Hat, well, isn't that a good thing? You now have a reasonable alternative to systemd.
Maybe. But OpenRC just works, and just does the same thing every version. I don't have to worry about it suddenly replacing another package, and reimplementing it badly.

I would kind of like them to bring the good bits of Windows (the Registry, COM, their event logger) to their version of Linux, but know it's pretty unlikely.

I cannot FUCKING BELIEVE I can't undervolt nvidia GPUS on linux (not to mention that you can't strictly undervolt on linux anyway, there's literally no way to make a custom voltage curve... all you can do is shift it up and then limit the max clock speed) without starting an X server first, my dudes. nvidia-settings is dependent on an x server running. What the fuck! Why! I'M HEADLESS NIGGAS! GOD DAMNNN!!!!

It's a solid alternative to configuration files in various formats and many different locations throughout the os.
No, it’s just another location to look for config files. Most of them you’re still looking for in random ~/AppData/Whatever style paths. Applications are no more consistent about using that than they are with putting dotfiles in ~ or ~/.config.

Anyway, I changed the interface on my COM component so it has a new GUID now. Check in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT under CLSID/{1488-41-5318008-1351}. No, I didn't delete the old one, someone might still be using it.
So anyway I was saying, if you want to check the settings, go into HKCU/Software. Or was it HKLM/Software? No wait, it was also in HKLM/Software/Wow6432Node because I have a 32-bit build. No, my uninstaller doesn't know about it.
So ANYWAY, I was saying, the ACL for HKLM/Software/Wow6432Node/TNDCopypastaGenerator is...

I never said the Registry wasn't horrendously overengineered!

I miss Solaris. It's the only OS (yes I know it isn't Linux) where I actually understood the init system. IMO systemd ruled and I could do the one job I had (controlling a couple racks of modems) in it by just editing a couple text files.
I have no idea why I said "systemd" here when it's obviously not what I meant.

Happy International Women*'s day KDE Users. I hope all you Women* users of KDE enjoy this day.

Shamelessly stolen from the Tranny Sideshows thread.

It's not "just another location", it's a whole labyrinth of dead ends to attempt to find your configuration in that requires a full separate toolkit to traverse and edit.

As bad as systemd-journald is, the Windows Registry approach is doubly so, and for a great many of the same reasons.

Cool. Now how about fixing kwin and mouse handling so I don't have to fuck around with toggling fullscreen off and on to play Warframe?
