What in the hell does someone with that job title even do? Like on a day-to-day basis? I asked someone I know in the tech sector and he just laughed.
My more generous interpretation is that he was working on user identity verification and management, considering how serious Netflix is about preventing account sharing and location spoofing. Netflix's last account sharing clamp down was in 2023, which explains why he wasn't fired then as they would have needed him on that project, but he's getting the boot now because they're done with that and need to reallocate resources to keeping the site running. The most generous job description I can reverse engineer from “identity engineer” is the guy who maintains the corporate single sign on portal. This is usually a side job for a general sysadmin though.
I checked out his LinkedIn to see if he has found a new job as of March. The #ReadyToWork banner is gone from his profile, but it could be because he lists himself as employed by his personal "consulting company". His last personal post from January 19th states that he applied to 10 jobs and received 3 interviews, but there have been no updates since then. Perhaps an interviewer shattered his ego by reacting in horror at seeing his ghoulish face in person?
Job Search update: January 10 I was notified I was affected by the #Twitch500 RIF. I applied to 10 jobs so far starting Tuesday Jan 16 until today, Friday Jan 19. That's 10 custom cover letters, 10 versions of my resume highlighting the actual work I have done that's applicable to the job that I'm applying for.
Here's the results: I've already gotten two polite No's, but I've also got three first round interview appointments!
I'm prepared for the likelihood that it's going to be a long slog to find the next role that's a good fit for me but I'm also hoping for the best, and maybe, just maybe, I'll meet my (very aggressive) personal goal of having a job offer by my birthday on the 28th.
Looking for your next job is a lot like dating, if you are trying to fake it 'till ya make it, you're likely to set yourself up for failure. Be yourself. Be _proudly_ yourself. I'm Queer, I'm Trans, I'm being clear and honest about that in my cover letter, I want to work at a company that accepts me for exactly who I am. My fellow job seekers, I feel your pain. The No's can be demoralizing. The lack of responses can be excruciating. Keep your chin up, believe in yourself and dream BIG. We are only limited by our imagination.
