Technically it could be much easier to keep track of who is actually participating and not just pretending, a simple script could check if any of the people involved (assuming its on steam) is playing the game or not, could even have a leaderboard and shit.

But they wont because gamers have no self control anymore.

Boycotts and video games have a history of not going very well.

They only really work if you have enough popular support and sometimes people think they have the support of the the majority of others have but they in reality don't. The notorious image of the Boycott Modern Warfare 2 (WE WANT DEDICATED SERVERS) shows that group had 833 members. Even if they all held firm and never bought the game, it sold 12 million units in 2009 so what would of ultimately been accomplished? 10 people boycotting a game only 50 people play daily is going to make a bigger impact then 10 people boycotting a game 50,000 play daily.

There is also the issue for some games where it doesn't matter if people stop playing the game or don't buy it for whatever reason it doesn't matter because whales keep buying things anyway.

Preaching to the choir mate. It's extremely easy to pay lip service to a "cause" without following through especially when it comes to anything involving the interwebs. Whales keeping shitty game practices afloat has been a thorn in gaming's arse since you had non-gamers start to infiltrate the culture. These days with the nigh unlimited ways of hemorrhaging money when playing a singular game that line between your average player and "whale" status is getting mighty blurry.

It doesn't have to be a a rigid boycott with brigading and other gay shit, just being around and calling the company shit is enough. I'll never buy a Ubisoft game, for example, but i don,t go around shooting it. I just keep my precious chud money. I'm sure the companies are well aware of this.

This is exactly what I have done for nigh on a decade. I don't preorder, no day 1 purchases, no buying from predatory companies, loads of pirating etc. I'm under no illusions this is making any sort of impact on their bottom lines or changing anything as a whole. It does however make me feel better about not being ripped the fuck off so I think it's worth it.
