The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they will step back as "senior" royals and work to become financially independent.

In a statement, Prince Harry and Meghan also said they plan to split their time between the UK and North America.

The BBC understands no other royal - including the Queen or Prince William - was consulted before the statement and Buckingham Palace is "disappointed".

Senior royals are understood to be "hurt" by the announcement.

In their unexpected statement on Wednesday, also posted on their Instagram page, the couple said they made the decision "after many months of reflection and internal discussions".

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They said they plan to balance their time between the UK and North America while "continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages".

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said discussions with the duke and duchess on their decision to step back were "at an early stage", adding: "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The couple's announcement on Wednesday comes two months after the Duke of York withdrew from public life after a BBC interview about his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in August.

Oh right, I've got you. She absolutely could put out a photograph in informal clothing, which is what the Mother's Day photo was supposed to be. But Royal watchers scrutinise everything they wear, and women's magazines feature details of the brands her and the children are in so upper middle class mothers can copy their style. Hence they've latched onto the photoshopped picture, and specifically that the outfits look like photoshopped versions of outfits the family wore together in November.

There's far more detail if you want to go down the rabbit hole yourself. But basically it looks like Kate's wearing the exact same outfit, except the jumper is blue, and clothes autists who put me to shame have identified the cut and details of her turtleneck the same as the Reiss one that could have been digitally altered to be dark and a different colour. Likewise George's jumper appears to have been lightened and his chequered collar coloured in blue to distract from it (if you look closely it's still definitely chequered, and it's an area that was blurry and seems to have been Photoshopped). Princess Charlotte's wearing the distinctive frilly necked jumper, but she's got a cardigan that matches it perfectly as a twinset over it in the Mother's Day photo (and it appears the brand doesn't make that sort of cardigan) and she's also wearing a friendship bracelet that probably would have fallen off by now, and the cardigan and skirt are seemingly the most heavily photoshopped parts of the image etc etc.

Basically - if she's feeling frail or trying to hide a stoma, she absolutely could take a photo in casual loose clothing, but instead there's a heavily photoshopped image that's possibly old, and otherwise one pap shot of her face heavily obscured. There's separately a pap shot of her in sunglasses that was banned from the British press, but her face does look different in it. Hence the speculation that she's had something done to her face, or William gave her two black eyes, or she's all puffy post surgery.

We don't know what dress #2 looked like, though. Gold sequins might have been dress #2 because dress #1 hid the ileo bag even less. As noted, all her shit is very structured; it's her signature style. I doubt their options for Kate would have been structured gold sequins or flowy tulle ball gown.

Also, the sequins actually do hide it pretty well. It's only extremely obvious in certain photos. Otherwise it looks like the dress just laying incorrectly. Which would be a huge faux pas in itself.

I've also seen her wearing a lot of very high-waisted pants as of late. Those are also favored by stoma-havers.

I feel for her genuinely if she's going through it with an ileostomy. Seriously can't think of a less-royal experience than walking around with stool and farts leaking out of a hole in one's side. Fucking nightmare, regardless of what you think of her.

Literal royalty. Bitch doesn't FOLLOW fashion, she IS fashion. If she decided billowy gowns were the thing, that would be the thing.

Unless it's a visible colostomy bag. That will never (I hope) be fashion.

Agreed - she IS fashion, but it would be a decided change and would draw even more scrutiny/speculation to her. She may have thought that just rolling with a dress that kinda hid it in most lighting was her best bet.

If she truly has a bag now, it makes absolute sense she doesn't want to be seen for now, specially if it's temporary.

It's normal to try to be out of sight with someone like this, at least for normal people. The terminally online are used to Munchies showing all of their holes and gadgets on tiktok, so they expect Kate would do the same. She doesn't look like the kind of person who would do that, and she's also the Prince of Wales, so it's never happening.

There was an article in the NYT that made it sound like she was selling fancy jam.


Gotta say that I hate the name. Something in the combination of vowels and consonants is not happening for me.

Also, the only orchards down there are growing avocados and cherimoyas. Stonefruit is grown in the much less glamorous parts of the state.

The royal women wear British designers to show support for the British people, is how it was explained to me.
Just like American First Ladies are supposed to wear American designers and so on.
Yes, there can be changes to this, like Camilla wearing a navy blue Dior, but she and Charles were in France at the time, so it was a show of support for good relations. She wore a gorgeous sapphire necklace with it and looked lovely, IMHO.

This is something Megan has never, or more likely refuses to understand.

Actually there are loads of citrus orchards especially just on the other side of Santa Barbara, north of isla vista (of Elliot Rodger fame). Most of the houses I have visited in the region have some varietal of orange growing in the yard. There’s also lots of persimmon for some reason.

That said the name is trying way too hard.

Lol I'm getting sucked in to this thread and I've never thought much about the Royals beyond watching The Crown (and loving it, minus the last ass-kissing season).

But Meg. Dear. That font, if you can even call it that, is very "calligraphy is my passion." Those awkward flourishes are really awkward.
