Warhammer 40k

How do I get into warhammer as a complete newbie? I think the figures are cool but I imagine there's a bunch of games I would need to play if I wanted to understand all the lore right?
There's almost 40 years of lore now and it can be a goddamned mess. If you want to get eased into it, it's worth trying some of the video games like Dawn of War or Rogue Trader. Alternatively, start by choosing the faction that interests you the most and learn their lore, then move on into the wider world. (Also it wouldn't hurt to sell a kidney or start dealing drugs if you want to build an army.)

So what I do is just read stuff that pertains to your faction. It’s far more digestible and learning about the world through the lense of /yourdudes/ is a good way to get immersed.

However, kindly ignore the 40k YouTubers, they butcher the lore regularly. You should use pdfs for codexes (good source of intro lore) and novels before sinking actual cash.

A box of 10 marines is the best way to start the model/painting side of things.

perhaps a dumb question, but Hammer and Bolter used to have a pretty neat online painter that allowed me to try different colors before messing up the figures, it had a ton of options liker armors and weapons, but in a recent update to the site they fucked it up and its now back to the bare basics. Is there any similar substitute out there?

Watch people play the tabletop, pirate buy an few books. The video games are mainly skewed towards the Imperium, but they generally turn out to be an power fantasy or run off an completely different ruleset.

For actually playing on the tabletop, you'll actually have to do your research on the meta before you start buying shit.

If you want to get a feel for 40k or AOS, you could try their skirmish games. Warcry is for AOS and Kill Team is for 40k. Let's you use the mainline models in smaller squads and while they do play differently, it still gives you and understanding about the game & units. Plus it holds you over from buying full scale armies if you're strapped for cash at the moment.

As for lore, there's plenty of videos surrounding that to get you an idea of the setting & armies, but it's mostly focused around 40k. Some suggestions off the top of my head include Arch, Adeptus Ridiculous, The Remembrancer, Baldemort, and Grimdark Narrator.

The lore basically has nothing to do with the tabletop. If you want to get into the lore, watch these two videos(yes, they're almost a combined 2 hours, but they give decent summaries)

Once you've found a faction or two you want to do a deep dive for, hit up the channels that StevieLasVegas mentioned and you can get hours or lore dumped straight into your brain via youtube.

Amazon does this all the time when a book edition goes out of print. It has something to do with how the listing tables work, but the guy who explained this to me didn't do a good enough job and I can't seem to follow. I've largely given up on amazon as a whole and have taken to scouring local used bookshops for stuff I've missed.
You’re mistaking it with how eBay handles an OOS item. Amazon literally adds and deletes items on the fly, they have far better logistics. That’s just 3rd party sellers hoping for a bite.

eBay has a policy where it’s cheaper to change the price on a listing that you’re going to continue to have future inventory of than to take down the listing.

Thread tax - what books would I go to in order to find any lore about The Archivist? I want the model but before I pay $150 to a scalper or $80 for an OG proxy…

Are you talking about the zoat? I don't think you'll get much lore on him because zoats mesh weirdly with the current tyranid lore so they'll probably be kept pretty mysterious.

The Lexicanum page for him says White Dwarf March 2020 has a few pages dedicated to him

Ty, that helps.

I just can’t decide if I want him bad enough to buy the ancient or new model. His lore would determine that to me. Bc from what I gather since everyone can use him he’s just there to collect genetic material regardless and fights for whoever is best that day.

I’m hoping the lore supports my thoughts based on the few rules I have seen.

I’ll go check out that issue of White Dwarf, I knew downloading ALL of them would pay off some day.

I know you have a couple answers already but if you want a start, you can go one of three ways.
If you're interested it the lore, just pick a book and start reading.
If you're interested in the tabletop the most, buy a codex for a team you'd like to play and read the rules.
And if you're interested in painting the most, just buy a model you think looks cool and go from there.

I got my start from my first codex.

Been two hours, brothers, and no one has leapt on the juicy, dangling "y'know who else is chemically castrated?" bait.

The GW miniatures are beautifully sculpted but command a merciless price tag. Learning to paint miniatures in general is an extremely rewarding hobby. You can get started with cheap Reaper Bones miniatures and the new Army Painter Fanatic starter set to try it out. There's an endless amount of beginner mini painting tutorials on YouTube.

Lore is as easy as picking up a book.

Does anyone have any good Fantasy or AoS books they'd recommend?
The gotrek and felix books are the only ones I've touched so far, I might look at the Thanquol and Ulrika books to see what exactly they where doing in the 10 year timeskip unless anyone has some better recommendations.
The Ulrika stuff is pretty decent. The only other fantasy stuff I touched was Gotrek and Felix (which is of course what lead me to Ulrika) so I can't comment on the rest.

She does wind up dead sexy though, at least if you're into big tiddy Goth tomboy GFs.

Personally I'm disappointed they give her a fucking bow in TWW3. When she was down in the Empire she was very fond of pistols for their killing power and compactness, even using one that she had personally double-shotted with silver against a fellow vampire. Its been a while since I read that book (Bloodsworn) and I don't have a copy at hand to check but I'm pretty sure she snagged both the weapon and ammo from either an associate of a full-blown Lector of Sigmar or possibly the man himself. She also displays zero inclination towards magic despite being a vampire, preferring a good old fashioned ass-beating.

In that book she also saved Karl Franz from a vampire plot to kill him with some sort of magical disease before he lets her depart unharmed at the end partly because he had given her his word earlier, partly out of gratitude, and partly because he was curious to see just what she'd do in the future, so I'm pretty sure not a single vampire on that planet wants anything to do with her even by the End Times since she's all but openly declared her intent to fuck over every single scheme of theirs for power. Her End Times depiction is widely despised for not just the poor writing but also because it was hilariously out of character since it seemed like she was going to get a redemption arc similar to Genevieve Dieudonne.

I kind of enjoy stories about the T’au. My biggest problem is that if the T’au are present, imperials are immediately fodder. Particularly with space marines. I understand that the T’au losing once would change the course of their faction and possibly cripple them for years but damn the Imperium writ large and the space marines in particular lose like 90% of their strength when paired against them.

Also, dumb question but don’t the Ruinous Powers have the most to lose if the psychically weakened T’au come to power? I know they’re not appealing as daemon-food but I feel like some foresight would point them out as a significant threat being as they are largely immune to chaos corruption.

I always felt that with all the other shit going on for the Imperium, they just don't have the dedication to outright annihilate the T'au. Plus since the T'au are willing to actually work with the Imperium to a point, they're a lesser evil to put up with.

As for the second question, Chaos is starting to take a hold on the T'au. In Farsight's book in The Arks of Omen, Khorne managed to manipulate him for a bit. Hopefully they build off of that because it is an interesting development for them.

Both of you got points, but in that case Space marines wouldn't really be breathing down on Tau necks. Titans and marines are supposed to be held back for big important shit.

The fact that nobody has yet recommended any of The Vampire Genevieve novels suggests to me that everybody in this thread except me is a nigger.

That's true for virtually every other galaxy ending threat. Though one can argue Chaos gods are just being short sighted Niggers afraid the other gods gain more influence
