Has anyone tried to actually break down the stereotypical Shonen hero? Because, I feel like a lot of their traits and attitudes are fatalistic, if not, nihilistic.

I'm serious. It's like...it's like they preach this "none of it matters in the end" tripe and all I really have to say to that is, yes, a lot of shit does matter. It's mostly a "forgiveness" lesson, but it gets to a point that they might as well just outright say "so? we're all gonna die some day, so how is killing the guy who basically did every evil thing possible and might do so again gonna fix anything?"
 
I stand by the idea that the Four Devas is probably the greatest arc in anime history. The only thing that comes close for me is another arc in the series you'll get to eventually.
Other shows tried to do this but I think Gintama was one of the few franchises that it works because you got 200+ episodes to establish the town and its inhabitants, and there is no power escalation bullshit that makes you think "why are those characters able to tackle their opponents".

I feel like a lot of series tried to but I can't think of anyone that did it well. Like maybe you can argue One Punch Man or Hunter X Hunter do it because the former has the shonen protagonist go into apathy from one shotting everything, while the latter has bullshit psychology in the later parts. Also Eva might count since it's mecha shonen protagonist.

Issue with this idea is that it's pointless without coming out as needlessly edgy. Like Madoka already did the "being selfless won't make you happy" and Eva did the "actual child in those circumstances would grow fucked up".

however another aspect that often gets misconstrued/blown out of proportion is animu girls adoring each other doesn't mean they want to shlick it.
so it's not so much romantic or even sexual, more platonic/paternal/siblings etc.

Are you talking about Kimetsu no Yaiba? One piece for example doesn't have this problem. Luffy doesn't forgive the shit evil people do in the series. If anything it adds to the hype of the final fight of the arc where Luffy bests the shit out of the bad guy and doesn't feel the slightest remorse about it.

depends, it's important to remember fiction != reality. what some otaku enjoys is not necessarily a good reflection of society at large (although there's plenty discussion how art is downstream from that asf ). just think how your culture is depicted in media (even when it's not actively pozzed). or the opposite where people are too retarded for it with "oh you like X? THAT MEANS YOU WANT TO FUCK IT!! or fuck each other whatever - dude it's 2 girls hugging and caring about each other, calm the fuck down...

I've been bitching about Teyandee's subs for years now. But, they are by and far Discotek's worst subs. To somewhat play devil's advocate, I think the subs might have been provided by Tatsunoko themselves. It's not uncommon to see that with some smaller weaboo publishing companies in the West. Because Discotek's subtitles generally turn out okay. They even kept in all the JQ stuff in Angel Cop.

Still, all of Discotek's employees are giant homos and their opinions often suck.

depends, it's important to remember fiction != reality. what some otaku enjoys is not necessarily a good reflection of society at large (although there's plenty discussion how art is downstream from that asf ). just think how your culture is depicted in media (even when it's not actively pozzed). or the opposite where people are too retarded for it with "oh you like X? Thanks, I think I get it now. For the most part they don't see it the same way, but there are subcultures that see it exactly as we do and like it. That makes a lot of sense, obviously the Japanese wouldn't be a monolith on the issue. Sometimes it's nothing, sometimes it's the end of Kill la Kill and they decide "fuck it, we're doing this now"

It's basically an "aesthetic" with a focus on women and the relationship between them, hence "the garden of flowers/lilies" I mentioned previously (yuri - 百合 literally means lily).
Yuri can be romantic or platonic (pic examples below are the latter), even as a mere fleeting moment portrayed in a story. But at the end of the day and just like the other forms of media, what should be remembered firstmost: it's nothing more than a fantasy. A fiction.

I'd actually heard about this, that being a lesbian is seen as a phase some girls go through. I couldn't get much more information though, since this was on Reddit and was being used as an example of how regressive Japan can be.

The drama I did mention was a Yukiko's one-shot called "How She and I got close" (from a serialized anthology), initially translated and uploaded to Dynasty-scans. In the story, the MC agrees to meet a girl who actually turns out to be a creepy cross-dressing dude, and she's subsequently saved by the gyaru heroine. It hits too close to home for the trannies who took it as a personal attack and they cried about it. The mods removed the manga because "the message it contains does not reflect the views of Dynasty" and locked up the discussion thread.

Dynasty-scans being a shit website run by fags was well-known so it wasn't surprising, but it remains funny how ass-blasted they got over an innocent little story.
The discussion thread on Mangadex isn't much better and I can sorta see why some kiwi users have issues with yuri as the well is poisoned by the alphabet freaks in the English-speaking sphere.

The Japanese author is a woman too btw.

It's why I prefer directly lurking JP communities and buying my mangas in moonrunes instead.
Speaking of that, I got the full serie of Thermae Romae discounted at ~500 yen from Amazon JP (in digital Kindle format though, doesn't rape my wallet with shipping + custom fees)
