I imagine Macron never expected Russia to continue the SMO after Zelensky rejected Russia's terms in March 2022 and afterward literally destroyed the AFU, its NATO tanks and weaponry as well as "volunteers" from NATO countries.
I am beginning to think Macron and the other NATO leaders are more like Louis XVI, King George III or Nikolai II; clueless about the real world and events swirling around them while cosseted by obsequious courtiers alongside a few frustrated ministers practically screaming common sense at them that they refuse to acknowledge. I was thinking some more about the discussion about tanks and misconceptions around them. I remembered the "survivability onion" from an old-ish DoD presentation.
You'll notice nowhere on it is "be super unkillable with our amazing tanks with perfect armor", in fact the advice is never to be seen in the first place, and avoid taking any hits.

I chalk it up to mis-interpreting the results from Desert Storm.
Desert Storm was an overwhelming, massive success for the Abrams because:
1. There was absolute air superiority
2. Intelligence, command, and coordination between Abrams tank troops and the larger battlefield was unmatched, while Iraqi communications and coordination were almost nonexistent due to the coalition airstrikes that were being carried out on the daily due to the above
3. Abrams were manned and commanded by professional troops who'd spent years training to fight the Soviet Union at the height of its power - when you've been training to fight World War III all your professional life, you're going to have an edge on almost any battlefield.
The armor protection of the Abrams was probably the least important aspect to its overwhelming success in Desert Storm, and even then that wasn't a 100% success rate as the Iraqi's still managed to score mission and mobility kills against Abrams tanks in the war.
