When players of EA Games’ long-running title The Sims downloaded the latest expansion pack, their simulated worlds were given an eco-conscious upgrade. The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle allows gamers to move their characters into ripe-for-regeneration neighbourhoods, switching consumption-heavy lifestyles for a reduce-reuse-recycle mantra and offering virtual efforts to improve the pixelated environment.

But why was one of the world’s best-selling video game series promoting a greener lifestyle?
Last September, 21 influential games industry companies, including Microsoft, Google and Sony Entertainment, signed onto the UN Environment ‘Playing for the Planet’ programme, promising, alongside reducing emissions, to “help gamers make meaningful change of their own” through in-game “green nudges”. The aim was to shape the behaviour of the 2.7 billion-strong global gaming community by normalising eco-consciousness.

It's George Costanza's Law: "people will watch it because it's on television." Madden and CoD fans buy the newest games out of habit, because it's just what they've done the past couple years. People like FGC buy the newest fighting game because it's part of being in the community. It's hard to shake something once it becomes tradition.

It's also because FGs are insanely unpopular and unfun. After a few months for most people - the meta is established and the game loses a lot of replayability. Online you can expect to face <POPULAR CHARACTER 1> or <POPULAR CHARACTER 2> and have the same kind of matchup you had with those characters in the previous game. The game numbers change but because of esports, rushdown is still the best way to play and will be so for the foreseeable future. There hasn't been a fighting game (that I know of at least) that's had very solid Single Player content since like Soul Calibur 2 - although people do speak highly of SF6's.

There's really only two fighting games (Street Fighter and Tekken) with a few smaller releases/versions in between major SF and Tekken releases (aka Mortal Kombat, Injustice, Soul Calibur, UNIST, Persona Arena/etc). They don't make a ton of money on their own and die off fairly quickly (doubly so for non SF/Tekken releases) so companies try and extend the window of a game being popular through esports and timed DLC character releases.

So by the time a new game rolls around - the larger community has been on one that's old and tired for a while.

depends. dmc was just a failed reboot/non mainline game that can be easily forgotten. alan woke 2 is integral to "remedies shared universe" or whatever (fucking stupid, there's a difference between an easter egg/reference for fans and going full blown MCU) and slop like TLOU2.

So Sweet Baby Inc ARE the old Anti-GamerGaters. They're all tied to shit like Silverstring or whatever and Sarkessian's clique from 2014. They just realized sometime in the past 10 years they could form a DEI consulting firm and extort -- literally extort, they brag about doing it in a gaming TED talk -- companies into giving them money to meet stupid ESG and DEI goals. At the same time every game they touch generally turns to shit, because they aren't actually any good at writing, design, characterization, storytelling... anything.

Financially, they're tied to some of the big names, too, apparently. Blackrock, I think? The same Blackrock who's CEO was caught in an interview saying that they need to "force behaviors" on people.

When someone decided recently to create a steam curation list that just lists games that SBI is confirmed to have worked on, they went absolutely bugfuck nuts about it. Because you aren't supposed to organize against them. You aren't supposed to call them out like that. You can be mad, you can bitch about them being involved in useless twitter threads, but an organized warning list that is basically a giant red flag on steam pages if you follow it? That's too far. And right after that, you had them all crawling out of the woodwork becuase even 10 years in, these types can't help themselves -- screaming racism, sexism, transphobia, whatever weaponized word they could in order to try and get their personal armies to show up. This included openly trying to take down the list and it's creator via public false flagging. It didn't work despite them stomping their feet, cause they didn't do anything wrong according to the TOS, a SBI-Detected group is perfectly fine.

It got dumber. Just like in 2014, they all decided at once to start posting strangely similarly worded hit pieces. Kotaku's editor in chief tried to infiltrate the discord -- using her real name, and asking hard hitting questions like "why don't you use your real names so I can ruin your lives without effort?" You had SBI staffers explaining that you can't be racist against white people and oh yeah they're working for EA now and won't hire white people. (Fun fact, this is a civil rights act violation and a crime.)

Oh, and the fucking ADL showed up, declaring it time for the government to regulate gamers. Just like back when Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian were invited to the UN to try and drum up support for anti-free speech rules and regulations. And you have right wing grifters showing up trying to pull a Milo but they're too shit to do so and are getting called out left and right.

This is at the same time DEI and ESG shit is on it's way out. Japan has basically pulled out of investing it in entirely, for example. Blackrock et all are all giving warning signs that this shit isn't working and they're going to bail.
