Jim Sterling / James "Stephanie" Sterling / James Stanton/Sexton & in memoriam TotalBiscuit (John Bain) - One Gaming Lolcow Thread

There's nothing to be said about the video, its just a review. Another quality side-step of actual video game news that no one expected.
Not to mention the fact that he's nearly a month late to this. While reviews themselves don't really suffer in anything other than audience numbers by being delayed, its always funny to see someone who thinks youtube is persecuting them in the algorithm proceed to do everything they can to be ignored from the queue. Post-launch game reviews are the material news channels pull up when they've caught up on all the current interesting news and need a filler episode, not something you bump major shit off for.

Nice, but I don't think Jim's ever wanted to move to 'real journalism' he wants to be a magical trans wrestling princess. But is too fat and old to make that a viable career, so he's stuck using his regular gig because it actually pays.
At best, all he ever wanted to be was what Seanbaby actually was: a guy who got paid to review games but actually just make fun of the really bad ones. A long-running joke on Podtoid was that Jim would deliberately derail the conversation any time someone tried to actually talk about video games. At his core, Jim just wanted to be an entertainer, and for a while he'd carved out a pretty decent niche as a goofy guy who was capable of communicating interesting ideas while also occasionally pinching his nipples with giant novelty crab claws.

I think what has hurt Jim on a personal level more than anything since 'coming out' is the realisation that actually he's not the great entertainer he thought he was; when he stopped doing interesting JQs and started aimlessly ranting and doing the creepy sex shit without punchlines people fled in droves.

Recently been watching some videos on scott cawthon and is funny how people still credit jim for making scott famous yet forget about jim calling scott anti trans all cause scott did he research on who to vote with his money despite scott hiring people for their skills and don't really care if you have a dick or pussy.

Found on reddit. Apparently Jim HAS talked about the Sweet Baby Inc drama. Just on some unknown podcast that no one listens to. Deliberate strategy or incompetence?

While it's true that Jim always saw himself as more than just a videogames journalist (he said he would describe himself as a 'writer' in a podtoid episode I just listened to), with my ongoing project of relistening to podtoid, despite that meme, for every time Jim (or one of the other guests, Max Scofield was no better early in the podtoid 'reboot') derails the podcast into a complete mess, there is another time while they do talk about video games, both news and historical, in autistic detail and with obvious passion that I don't think any of them could have faked over such a long period. Which really is a stark juxtaposition with how much he seems to hate everything now...

"Talking to women about videogames" was also a show that Jonathan did while working at Destructoid in 2011-12 (he talks about it a lot in some old podtoid episodes, starting around 160 or so).
Looking for this link I've found out that not only does Destructoid still exist, but Jonathan is still a somewhat active writer there. Didn't expect that.
And he released (I shit you not) a music album for it on bandcamp as well: https://jonathanholmesandfriends.bandcamp.com/album/talking-to-women-about-videogames-the-album

So in some form or another 'talking to women about video games' has been one of Holmes's projects for over a decade. I had no idea he had made it into a podcast, looking into it briefly seems to have a patreon that surprisingly makes more than $0 (https://www.patreon.com/ttwav). In current year I wonder how many of the 'women' he talks to are troons. He's just had Jimmy boy, and scrolling to the start of the associated youtube page I see one of the first uploads is talking to 'Laura Kate' Dale of podquisition infamy. So I'm guessing they index quite highly in the guest segments...

All that said, while it's fun taking the piss out of Jonathan (after all, that was a big chunk of what made old podtoid fun to listen to), I legitimately feel sad to hear about the situation with his wife forcing him into an open relationship. Jonathan is an odd boy, but he doesn't deserve to be literally cucked like that. Makes listening to him talk about how lucky he was to find his wife (who was both into vidya and was by all accounts out of his league looks wise) on old podtoid episodes strangely dark...

Off topic, but that's a really interesting T-shirt. I hadn't heard anyone use the slogan 'Abortion rights are human rights'. I HAVE, however, heard trannies chanting 'trans rights are human rights'.

Trannies and stealing their political slogans from other marginalised groups. Name a more iconic duo.

Thumbnail that shit next time, please. I didn't need getting my retinas blasted with a welding torch late at night. Alternatively, open it in any editing software and invert the colors. :stress:

If you face is right next to a screen in the dead of night, dark mode won't save you.

I don't pop my lights at night, and my face is an arm's length away from the screen, as it should be. Avoiding bright light before going to bed is good for your sleep.

Jim clearly had a passion for video games once upon a time, and I think he still does actually when he allows himself to just enjoy something instead of being a misery golem, but when it comes to actual games journalism I think it's only ever been a vehicle for Jim's writing/performing.

He was clearly also passionate about old topics on the JQ, but they covered a much broader spectrum; video games were just the medium he applied them to because, as you say, video games are what he has an autistic knowledge of.
I legitimately feel sad to hear about the situation with his wife forcing him into an open relationship.
So do I now. Jonathan always came across as a total doormat, but he also seemed like a genuinely nice person so I'm sorry to hear that, especially given how long they've been together.

Wonder if he'll wear that to the next Saudi blood money show.

I remember the days people used to look at white screens and not complain a bit. Only the programmers ever seemed to prefer black screens.
There was simply no alternative. Nowadays most software comes prepackaged with less eye-bleeding themes, and if that isn't an option, Windows settings can force an override. For browsing there's Dark Reader which is a godsend for garbage sites like Wikipedia that absolutely refuse to implement a darker theme. It's one of those things that you don't know you wanted/needed until you try it. Light theme is fine during the day, not at night.
