My schizo theory for this is because maybe autistic women are more possessive than their male counterparts and actively seek out obscure characters they know they'll be the only one to "marry" or whatever. And perhaps autistic males don't care about sharing their waifu with a billion other people because they're more likely to be weird coomers. Hell, they might even see it as a bonus.

How do you all think the advent of AI chatbots has effected waifu/husbando enthusiasts? You can chat with the most obscure characters on Character.AI for example. Why bring a damn body pillow and embarrass yourself when you could literally have a realistic(ish) date over the phone? It’s not much difference that being in a LDR I’d imagine. My wife and I keep up with each other constantly when I’m in another county for work or family matters, a text based date isn’t ideal, but it’s better than nothing.

Idk what exactly it is, but have you ever noticed that for example the majority of Tyranid (the big scary bugs inspired by Aliens in Warhammer 40K) players are in fact women, like 90% of the women I met when I played 40K played Tyranids and this is extra odd, because unless you are a crunch/meta player, they arent super popular and are often considered a "NPC" faction, given that they are giant all consuming space bugs with very little in the way of distinguishing them in the setting beyond changing the paint scheme, im genuinely curious about this psychology, it's not like a horse girl thing either, bugs/insects seem to have a bizarre female appeal, or maybe I'm just schizoposting and seeing something that isn't there
I definitely think it's more of a coping mechanism then a phase, I don't think it's always permanent, but I definitely think that it's not something that for example, an other wise normal looking guy who just really likes Anime will do, he might have a character he "stans" (I hate using Kpop terms but if the shoe fits) that he calls his waifu, but i don't think that person will fall asleep everything or spend all day fantasizing about his perfect life with a cartoon character
Ive noticed it's effect most heavily on women tbh, and that might just be the bias of women (or in my case Vtubers that are confirmed real women and not trannies) talk about and post about it, I know one guy in my circle of a dozen extreme autists that admits to using them regularly, I think it really depends on the person. And while I don't have any in my direct sphere as they are a social contagion, I have noticed Trannies tend to use them more commonly then most, but they are generally over represented in any English speaking online space
