I hate the fact that now I have to look at a cool looking black protagonist now and have to parse through whether or not it was done because of DEI reasons, or if it was because someone had an idea and wanted to follow through with it.

We can't have cool shit like Prototype anymore with a black protagonist without autistic screeching over it it seems.

Luckily there is a test!

If the black person has the shaved side + cornrows hairstyle? DEI Reason.
Any other haircut that make them look like a normal person? Probably fine.

I could not agree more. There's plenty of characters I loved in the past. But in this day and age, I am constantly thinking in the back of my mind. "Was this intended?"
And I hate having to think that way.

I think this detection method falls flat against games like Forspoken and Unknown 9: Awakening. Forspoken was braided at best.

All player choices that wouldn't occur if not chosen
I guess you could say that. It's still pandering. Bailey Jay and Buck Angel (passing until naked trannies) shouldn't exist in an iron age D20 world where surgery, hormones and all the other horrors modern medical marvels of current year shouldn't exist.

You can argue about spells that allow transition like disguise self or reincarnation, but who actually wants to be a woman with a dick? The major reason ladyboy troons don't get the chop is because they're aware that it's genital mutilation and that what they can get is nowhere close to the real deal, not because they wouldn't be happy with a functioning, capable of orgasm, natal vagina. If magic can transition someone to a female body, then there's no reason for girldick. I just want the immersion-breaking shit out of my games, even if it's completely optional.

I think I'm missing how this is Gamergate 2.
Because it's all about grift. It's all about generating a "rise up" attitude within a base that thinks some faggots sperging out on YouTube and social means the industry will be forced to listen and cave to their demands. And, in the future, those same faggots will shift to the other side of the spectrum once it suits them and they no longer need to go on the offensive. It's going to be a constant back-and-forth on his theme park ride.

It just seems like DEI/ESG golems are desperate to have a boogyman to fight against.
Yes. Part of the postmodern ordeal is defining yourself by what you're not rather than what you are.

It used to be either tokenizing or incidental happenstance. Tokenization was usually just done as a matter of appeasing the idea of diversity, but it received flak for what it was throughout history due its obvious pandering. Tokenized black character was usually depicted as super smart and most likely a future rocket scientist or medical practitioner. "Magic negros" were usually tokenized blacks who just seemed to have all the answers and solved every problem with sage wisdom.

Now, here's how SBI's consultancy should work in this area. If you have a token black character and a writer recognize it, they could be like, "Let's actually make this character a real person. This tokenization just looks silly."

If you've played Half Life 2, there's never a moment when you're interacting with Eli or Alyx Vance and the game constantly reminds you that these characters are black, black, black. Their skin color is completely incidental. Avid fans of the Legend of Zelda games don't look at the Gerudo as being anything less than a facet either. Ganondorf is arguably that world's equivalent to an African or Middle Eastern person, yet nobody really thinks of Ganondorf as a "marginalized black person" or anything like that. He is his own person.

Sometimes, however, blatant stereotypes are welcomed and appreciated. SBI don't seem to understand this.
>Sergeant Johnson from Halo.
>Agustus Cole from Gears of War.
>Barret Wallace from FF7
>Jax from Mortal Kombat
>Louis from Left 4 Dead ("grabbin' peels!")
>Doc Louis from Mike Tyson's Punchout!!

Or there could be hoards of retards turning this into a thing and I'm just keeping to myself and not noticing.
because GG1 started as "don't give good reviews and preferential treatment to someone who sucked your dick", when people started to make fun of 5 guys & fries suddenly almost all of games media and quite a few studios went into total SHUT IT DOWN mode.
it was less about what happened (everybody already knew for years kotaku, polygon & it's ilk were shitrags and easy to buy off), but the complete overblown, disproportional reaction to the whole thing.
then it spiraled from there.

Kotaku's Editor in Chief, Jen Glennon has resigned & calls the CEO of G/O Media "an herb" in a tweet.

The other issue is that there are many different ways to tell a story, and something that might be considered positive in one genre or format can look stupid and lazy or overwrought in another. Jax and Louis are supposed to be stereotypical because the stories they are in aren't built for in depth characterisation. All of the characters in their games are supposed to represent archetypes, and usually their style of gameplay compliments their characterisation.

Except... Jax has been in the game series since forever. Midway has it's own consultancy groups in more recent years clearly.

Dats mah boy!

Not sure if I'd think Jax or Barret Wallace were particularly stereotypes though. Fighting games, especially back then didn't have much depth. But I don't remember many black dudes rocking the metal arms. And then there's Barre-.. wait... is metal arms a stereotype?

Edit: Okay.. maybe I am starting to notice a trend.

Barret most definitely. Constantly cursing and shouting. The "Mr. T" look was also done on purpose. But people liked that and got attached to him.

Jax was pretty much a big black man gonna pound your face in. That was the long and short of it. Nothing too fancy or elaborate. Just grab you and punch you.
