I hate to split hairs but overalls and dungarees aren't the same thing- similar in form, but not in function. Overalls are more rugged and practical, usually somewhat waterproof and with loads of pockets for tools and cigarettes and shit. Otherwise your reasoning for women (developmentally delayed, pregnant or otherwise) wearing them is probably spot-on, likewise for fat men.

I think one of the reasons they're common among toddlers is because you can easily attach reins or a walking harness to the straps. The same might be of MRDD women.

In my locale we also have "coveralls," which are the full-body things you wear when you're going under the house. It looks like "dungarees" might be a Commonwealth distinction. (If you are looking for Oshkosh B'gosh, they are definitely called overalls worldwide.)

Bib straps are good to grab in a pinch, and they're also pretty sturdy if your child gets under the house a lot, or falls off things. A little protection, and they look cute when you patch them. Tradeoff is it's harder to get them off in a potty emergency, but again, if your target gets naked too much, you want that.

What really strikes me here is that the boyfriend has virtually zero presence in the story. Like, Lil Dood is upset that Bee is talking in a non-romantic way to her close friend Sandy, but the fact that Bee has a boyfriend isn't something she seems to consider an obstacle to their getting together. IDK, it seems to me like Lil Dood views Bee as a two-dimensional character with no life outside of the romantic story LD has planned for her. Basically I'm pretty sure Bee is going to get Single White Femaled.
