Just returned home after my first official
Game Developers Conference! Honestly, this past week was one of the most amazing and transformative experiences of my life. Even by Day 2, I was sitting in one of my panels on the Narrative track and saying to myself with no small amount of disbelief, "This is it. This is the thing I was meant to do. All of my experiences -- the disappointments, the seeming 'setbacks', the career pivots -- have all uniquely prepared me for this moment."
I've never been in a place where I've felt so held by my community -- where I could be both passionate and professional and those two qualities would not be seen in competition with one another. Furthermore, as a queer, nonbinary, and neurodivergent person, it was a genuinely moving experience to be told again and again, "We want you here. You belong here." Thank you to IGDA LGBTQ+ SIG,
IGDA Neurodivergent in Game Development SIG, and
Gay Gaming Professionals for hosting roundtables and panels to address our community's specific needs.
I had the immense privilege of being able to connect with and attend talks by
Larian Studios and
CD PROJEKT RED, studios whose works of art have changed me as a person, made me feel seen, and helped me understand that this is the career path for me. There were so many wonderful speakers, covering a truly staggering array of topics from crafting better relationships in games to how games can be used as a force for social good. The work of independent narrative and consulting studios like
Sweet Baby Inc. is more necessary than ever, and I stand in solidarity with those who recognize the incredible services they offer, making games more authentic, inclusive, and accessible for every gamer. It was also galvanizing to connect with
IATSE and CODE-CWA as they fight for unionization of all video game workers to ensure a sustainable future in this industry.
Lastly, the individuals I met throughout the conference were by far the most gracious, humble, and enthusiastic people I've ever had the pleasure of connecting with in person. Most times, networking for me has felt incredibly impersonal and transactional, but every person I met at
#GDC felt like they could become my next best friend whether we were swapping fantasy book recs, extolling our favorite side characters in BG3, or laughing as we tried to book it to our next panel. I truly felt like this community was welcoming to everyone, whether you were a student, a career changer like myself, early career, or a seasoned professional -- all bonded by our shared love of the video game craft.
Thank you to the CAs, the service workers, security professionals, organizers, and speakers for making my first GDC a truly unforgettable experience. I hope to make some truly awesome games with you all in the future.
(Bonus photo: On the trip back from GDC, we were able to stop by Pinnacles National Park with my best friend and travel companion, Loki.)
