Disaster "Mass casualty incident" declared after Key Bridge in Baltimore collapses

No article yet as this just happened, but could be big. One of the largest bridges in the world according to Wikipedia.

I agree wholeheartedly that infrastructure as a whole needs looked at. I do not agree that poor infrastructure caused this. Sone of you guys would see a bomb detonate on a road and blame poor infrastructure for there being a hole in it.
That being said what's more likely is that the ship was being poorly maintained. Unless there was some serious incident onboard that couldn't have been prevented, I'm willing to bet that some maintenance or safety checks went overlooked for way too long. Like that swinging boat ride a while back that was rusted through and they just painted over it. If there was any negligence that caused this accident, it was on the ship, not the bridge.

Yes, I'm willing to bet we get a lot of info about the people on the ship either not doing proper procedures or just a bunch of stuff left to rot for years. We definitely need to fix roads/bridges but nobody wants to spend the money.

I like the conspiracy theories because usually the dumbest answer is the right one (lack of maintenance/incompetence) rather than a mysterious thing.

After a healthy education of watching a dozen ship crash videos, these big civilian ships turn like ass. It will take miles for them to change course.

It is also Yuge and Bigly, and thus heavy.

If it looses steering, there is nothing you can do about it.

Now we need to know why it lost power. If it was poor maintenance, expect a giant sue-ance.

Bonus fact, harbor pilots are local steersmen who know the area, this was important in older times when a captain couldn't memorise all the hidden reefs in every port he visited.

Dig a tunnel. It will cost more but that way you wont be dealing with the risk of collision caused by Bangladeshi ship pilot driving mutliton freighter while drunk and uneducated. It is a frightening fact that most merchant seamen nowdays are being pulled from the most impoverished and uneducated shitholes because it is cheaper. This is what happens when we offload manufacturing, supply and labor to the 3rd world instead of using our own Cletuses.
All Harbor pilots are local to the harbor. Local Baltimore pilots get all those ships in and out. What a pilot can’t do anything about is a poorly maintained ship that shits the bed and loses power while he is piloting it out to the bay.

There is already a massive tunnel just down from the Bay Bridge but it was so congested they built the bridge to help with the traffic flow. Tunnels are a lot harder and more expensive to build. Also, a big drawback is hazardous materials can’t use tunnels, lots of hazardous materials are transported in and out of the port.

Look, all I know, roight, is corporations been pushing for die-versity, roight, in every level of engineering and high level mechanical operation. Now, I’m not a ray-cist…I just don’t think them brownies ought to work those engines, thats all.
Why is it that suddenly everyone in this thread is an engineer who specializes in bridge design and maintenance?

hoh boy:

Bridges in navigable water have been designed for vessel impact for decades. It used to be a pretty common mode of bridge failure. This bridge was built before such provisions. Looking at recent pictures, they have installed dolphins but they seem pretty far from the pier. I don't see any structural retrofits to the pier either. I am shocked that better countermeasures weren't installed; the dolphins did not prevent the ship from colliding head on with the pier and I don't think any retrofit will make a pier capable of withstanding that if it wasn't originally designed for it.
I only did a quick skim but it looks like the minimum criteria is that it must be able to withstand an empty hopper barge drifting in the current, so even a bridge built to these standards likely would not have survived a direct hit from a (full?) cargo ship with plenty of momentum.

Only you faggots could turn a freak accident of a boat running into a bridge into a fight about current year politics.
Sir, this is A&N. Did you expect anything less?
God all of you "I'm so above the place I am currently posting" fags are insufferable. People are sperging out about bridges and stuff and then out of nowhere you faggots are complaining about how muh /pol/tards are in the room and muh politics. Ironically doing the exact thing yourselves that you are complaining about.

What a pilot can’t do anything about is a poorly maintained ship that shits the bed and loses power while he is piloting it out to the bay.
OK so maybe the tunnel isn't the solution. I'll concede that.

But I am right about offloading the labor and maintenance of shipping onto pajeets. As a culture they are everything that people say about Jews and Muslims only with worse hygiene and safety practices.
