I've been catching up on Tard Baby General, and user Cuddle Striker (I won't summon them unnecessarily) noted back in 2020 regarding a different baby that (paraphrasing) if you have a brain stem plus even a tiny bit more, then not only can you experience pain, but basically your whole life is pain. All you'd know is pain. I think this was in reference to Kayli, but not sure.

I read this last night and I keep mulling on it - is this true? I've been placating myself in thinking that Luna can't feel anything, really, but since her brain was slowly replaced by cysts I'm worried there's enough matter there for pain. Someone please tell me I'm misunderstanding because it's making me Sad On The Internet.
Obviously, there's no way to know with certainty, and multiple brain regions are involved in nociception. However, I'm pretty sure that if she does experience pain, her remaining brain isn't able to interpret it in a way that we would recognize as "feeling". Over and over again in this thread, I marvel at how difficult it is to even conceptualize existing without higher brain function. We just don't have language to describe experiencing something like pain without being conscious of it.

The insult to her brain was extensive. I don't think that she has enough cortical tissue left to be aware of pain (sorry, I know I bang on too often about how little cortex I think she has). It's possible that some of the midbrain structures responsible for pain perception are intact and able to react appropriately to nociceptive stimulus, but without higher cognitive function, it's not interpreted as pain per se.

We do know that Luna has cortical visual impairment, which means that her eyes, retinas, and optic nerves are all normal and function as they should, but her brain is so fucked that it cannot interpret visual stimulus; thus, she is unable to "see". I think something similar can be said about her perception of pain. The "ow!" signals might still reach her brain, but it is not able to interpret them as unpleasant.

Pain perception in disorders of consciousness is a hotly contested topic, so feel free to reject my input, but as a brain person, it's really hard for me to imagine a way that Luna is possibly experiencing pain as you and I know it. I'll be back with sources when I'm not at work.

Kayli is an intriguing comparison. Her brain is (was?) fucked up, but compared to Luna, she's a Rhodes scholar. I'd buy that she experiences pain before I'd ever believe that Luna does. Even the mice used in scientific research have a more convincing claim to consciousness than Luna, and their brains are literally smooth (and tiny).

Tl,dr: Just read what @FarmVille said so much more succinctly above.

This is not true. The spinal cord sends pain signals from the nerves but if there is no thalamus the signals cannot be processed. Sensory signals have to be sent to a few parts of the brain none of which I suspect luna has.
That's what I thought, so I am relieved to hear it is indeed the case.
as a brain person,
This made me lol. I too am a brain person. Most of the time.

Thanks to both of you for laying it out. You reassured me most informatively.

I was wondering about the fast and slow signals (I am dredging up things learned in uni I haven't revisited for a long time), like how if you touch a hot plate you will have a signal to move your hand before you actually register that it's hot.

I wondered if Luna has that sort of pathway, but I remember a year or so back a video where Atlas bonked his heavy toddler head on Luna and there was zero reaction from her.

Ah but I just looked it up and it's related to limbs only so that makes sense, I guess. I imagine she would still have that spinal reflex to move a limb (I guess to decerebrate posturing?), but like you said it wouldn't register as pain.

She's, uh, getting very large.

Reading TUP’s post, you can comprehend the eyes having nothing behind them to register, nothing behind pain to register etc and imagine there being an imaginary “cut off” between body and brain, do you think Globyn are so stupid they can’t comprehend this? Like when she got Luna the glasses, does she not get that just because the eyes “work” there’s nothing to back them up brain-wise to actually DO anything, or do you think they’re just so anti—allopathic they think they know better?

You can’t convince me at this point that Robyn doesn’t have a pregnancy fetish. I was happy to have my kid, but I think her thing is the pregnancy itself and the accoutrements and asspats it brings (similar to Sammie Bushart but expressed in a different way).

do you think they’re just so anti—allopathic they think they know better?
Yes. There is nothing in that realm they don’t know…Globyn even possess knowledge of what is yet to be. They know better than everyone and Luna is the proof. That and the mountain spring water filter.

Nope. She wont get an ultrasound since she believes it cooks babies. Her only prenatal care this time has been massages, fetoscopes and super woo.
Fuck, what the hell are they going to do if she has fucking twins? I may not believe advanced maternal age is as big a deal as people make it out to be....but there is proof that being pregnant in your mid 30s increases the chance of twins by quite a lot. What would happen if one of them is breech!!?! What would she do????

She doesnt know fucking anything.

This actually just made me get a case of MATI out of knowhere. Fuck me, this is a nightmare waiting to happen....as we've seen already

Considering she appears to be doing unassisted free birth this time it is a wonder what may happen. She could get lucky or she could be risking her life as much as the childs.

Lbr I think all of us are cool with Robyn risking her life. If anything goes south hopefully she bares the brunt of it.
A child needs both mom and dad to have the best chance in life, for the sake of Atlas and this new infant (potentially twins with how big her belly is) I hope she lives.

Infants need their mother for the first few months of life. Toddlerhood is where fathers truly shine. (If Glenn would stop smoking and actually parent his functioning child as he should be doing!)

EDIT: But yeah, if the only complication is her hemorrhaging and the infant is perfectly fine, then that's her own damn fault and I have no sympathy

I can assure you a kid is better not having a parent than having a narcissistic parent.

Yikes.

Does she know for certain that there’s only one in there?
She better hope that's all it is. If it's polyhydramnios, it could indicate a serious problem with the baby.

my concern with her size is polyhydramnios and the potential issues related to it.
That's where my mind went, too. She is also looking a little puffy, especially in her face and legs. Could be regular third trimester fluid retention, or there could be something brewing.
