Diseased Open Source Software Community - it's about ethics in Code of Conducts

We never should have given India access to the internet.
On the contrary, we should have gotten them access to the internet sooner. If the first e thot to crawl on the internet had been besieged by millions of good morning madams and open source projects had been spears out against new comers due to the Vagening the internet would probably have been a much better place.

A major warning has gone out against the huge cloud provider known as Vultr (The Constant Company) which the provider can now claim full perpetual commercial rights over all hosted content on their servers. [reddit]

https://www.vultr.com/legal/tos/ [archive] (Section 12):

You hereby grant to Vultr a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, fully paid-up, worldwide license (including the right to sublicense through multiple tiers) to use, reproduce, process, adapt, publicly perform, publicly display, modify, prepare derivative works, publish, transmit and distribute each of your User Content, or any portion thereof, in any form, medium or distribution method now known or hereafter existing, known or developed, and otherwise use and commercialize the User Content in any way that Vultr deems appropriate, without any further consent, notice and/or compensation to you or to any third parties, for purposes of providing the Services to you.

This has generated a lot of outrage and people are going crazy over this.

for purposes of providing the Services to you
I’m not even pro se let alone a lawyer, but this seems to be the key. They can do the needful to provide the services you ordered.

It doesn’t sound like “we own everything you did forever” but boilerplate to cover mirroring or caching on servers anywhere.

Similar to the YouTube TOS for uploads. Which is actually more severe because if you lose your account access you can lose the ability to delete a video.

"Vultr" is the least trustworthy name they could've used.
"Yes, of course I trust this pack of vultures with my data!"

Exactly. This comes up every time someone actually reads the TOS of the website they're using and it's always the same ignorant posturing, by people who have no idea how copyright law actually works.

@teriyakiburns I agree the aim of the cloud provider is to cover their ass from insane copyright claims for actually providing the service they are selling.

But to give the devil his due, the way it is written if far in excess of what is necessary to just host the content the user upload, to cache it, and to upload content to people who request it.

With a user agreement like that, a company could go rogue with the content uploaded to it and cut the person who uploaded it out of any profits and right to remove content.

Thankfully no company that I know of has done that. But all it takes is a single vulture capitalist to buy out a company like this that going bankrupt and start to monetize all of the data uploaded to it.

I remember when Mental Outlaw shilled Vultr in his videos due to them having OpenBSD on their VMs. Good thing I couldn't make an account with them!

Edit: here's the video in question:
 metal outlaw being a literal nigger, that is such a nigger IQ take. templeOS for the whites, openbsd desktop OS only for the rock banging niggers.

Mental Outlaw is a grifter and I don't know why people still hold him up to this high standard. Every single one of his videos is about shitting on proprietary and praising FOSS to autistic levels, and more often than not he'll show in his videos that he's inept in what he's doing or trying to praise by making obvious mistakes and then downplaying them, or getting called out in the comments and then ignoring any critique.

For example, the video about OpenWRT. It doesn't feel like he has any practical experience with OpenWRT, or even uses something OpenWRT based. It feels like he pulled some old router out, found out it has OpenWRT packages, and then just did a live reading of OpenWRT's wiki without any sign of him knowing all the little fuckery involved with setting up OpenWRT, and then the best part, he ended the video on logging into the LuCI and doing zero configuration. Why not show everyone how to do a basic configuration? Is it because you've never used OpenWRT and you have zero idea how to actually use it?

Because here's the thing: LuCI is fucking ass, even more so than your typical pre-installed firmware web UI, and in my experience I have a better time configuring fucking RouterOS on a Mikrotik than configuring OpenWRT, because RouterOS is brutally technical in it's configuration, even if it's an inelegant clusterfuck.

In fact, here's a fun anecdote from my personal experience. I had a TP-Link router with OpenWRT set up to act as an access point with multiple SSID's on separate VLANs and subnets. It worked fine, worked fine after an OpenWRT upgrade, I didn't back that configuration up, I locked myself out of the router, I did a reset on it, and even after restoring the config 1:1 it refused to work for some reason. I gave up on it and it's gathering dust on a shelf now.

Meanwhile, when I locked myself out on my Mikrotik, after restoring the backup config I've essentially had a 1:1 restored config, only the user accounts weren't properly restored. And before that it bricked itself over an update, though it failed to properly restore the backup and I wasn't wise enough to do the text config exports too, but I managed to salvage most of the config. Still, somehow a bunch of drunk Latvians can manage to write a better working piece of proprietary router firmware than the godly FOSS devs.

Or the video praising VSCodium. Very quickly people pointed out that no, VSCodium is not a 1:1 replacement for VS Code, because if you're using MS build tools, those only really work well with VS Code, and also VSCodium doesn't use the official VS Code extension repo, which has all the extensions that make VS Code so great, and instead uses it's own, which is shit, has barely any extensions and they're all outdated. And if you want to use the VS Code repo that has all of them, you have to jump through hoops because of how absolutist VSCodium maintainers are in keeping it FOSS.

I have no fucking idea how anyone who's actually ever so slightly competent in using computers can look at his videos and not realize that no, he's not practicing anything he preaches, he's just grifting off of FOSStards that circlejerk around FOSS being great and proprietary being bad, and you'll learn absolutely nothing on value when you go to his channel. In fact, going to AlternativeTo and looking up FOSS alternatives for yourself will be more productive, and that's probably how he does "research" for his videos.

tl;dr: Mental Outlaw is a grifter and if the shittiest FOSS project in existence paid him to shill it, he'd make sure to never ever mention any of it's flaws. Fuck him and his dishonest nigger ass.
