In all reality how the internet is used has changed. Before face-to-face communication was still common and positive, and people had jobs that kept them busy most of the day. That meant that people would only go to sites like this for specific discussions.

Nowadays face-to-face communication is harder as the people around you are idiots and hostile, and many people are unemployed or have unproductive work that cannot keep their focus. They don't really socialize outside as much and become more desperate for meaningful connections with other. Which can end up being chiming in on discussions that they have nothing useful to add.
