Having grown up in a part of California that had a very large Hmong community I understand why someone might dislike them. They have the rather common problem of the 2nd generation immigrants, first to be born here don't really fit into either world. Lots of petty crime, drugs, gangs and violence. School doesn't seem to be a big priority to them compared to other Asians and they are poorer than the average Asian ethnicity.

Most of the Hmong are from Laos. They were fighting in a civil war in Laos that got caught up in the bigger Vietnam War. At the end of the war, they were on the losing side and had to flee for their lives.
They were real "country" people over there and there. When they came here, they were really into hunting and guns. They are also really into "community". They had to adapt both to living in the modern United States and not living isolated among themselves as a hill tribe.

As far as I've ever dealt with them, they are quiet and keep to themselves.

There was a longtime asshole DJ in Minneapolis named Tom Barnard who got alot of publicity for himself years ago by bitching about the Hmong. Actually, it was set and filmed in Detroit because Michigan gave Warner Bros a massive tax break to film it there. The original script had the story set in Minneapolis. The writer is from there.
