Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

but I feel like Hitomi Kanzaki from Vision of Escaflowne not being included for Maaya Sakamoto is a major gaffe
I also just noticed that Akashi of Tatami Galaxy isn't there, either. That's another popular series that most other people would know her from, even Zoomers have watched it simply because it's Masaaki Yuasa. It really does feel like whoever's been making those collages hasn't really bothered looking into anything that wasn't done/gotten popular in the last decade, especially since 2010 is being considered "old".

As hit or miss as English dubs are, at least some of them try to not sound the same. Though cases like Mr Rodger Smith from the Big-O having the same voice as several characters in the star wars games will never not be jarring. IIRC that VA was Admiral Aygo from SWTOR, the Tie Interceptor pilot from Empire at war, and a few other roles I can't remember.
A recent talent in the guild pool is Zeno Robinson, who's been managing to vary up his voice through a bunch of different protagonist and supporting character roles. I'm especially shocked by how perfect his Miles Luna impersonation is doing Hunter in Owl House.

That phenomenon would explain why a lot of characters in the japanese dubs sound exactly the same with zero attempts to sound any differently between roles.

It's called voice acting right? Not vocal range-r or range-ist. Vocal range helps diversifying roles but the acting part is still important you know. Also, it's kinda weird you compare between EN male voice actors to JP voice actressess.
If you wanna do vocal range comparison, really. Both cases have okay examples for their range.
Ayako Kawasumi, you can't say Saber and Megumi Noda sounds the same. Saber just becomes her default serious manner choice. The latter is quirky, comedic or dramatic tone.

Maaya Sakamoto, literally have two roles Shinobu and Merlin. Both characters have loli and adult form. I'd add Luciana from Blood Blockade as third example of a character having young and adult form. Basically you already have squeaky and deep voice. Then the neutral and more "generic anime girl" voice from like Aigis, Haruhi, Lunamaria and Aerith. There Ciel Phantomhive, Crona and Akito are somewhere in middle of neutral and deep tone. Tamayo from Kimetsu Yaiba has deep voice, but she's a more resevered character rather than very confident type like Kiss Shot or Merlin.
Her true or singing voice from songs like Platinum - Card captor Sakura or Loop - Tsubasa Chronicle.

There are like hundreds of anime more than average Western video games. Overlapping character archetypes and type casting happens.

Interesting Ayako doesn't have other well know roles despite being one of the most well known characters in anime. Though there's like 50 saber likes in the series, but I don't think all of them share their voices.

Also I remember Shinobu originally had the Haruhi (the Suzumiya one) as VA and they had a running gag she never talks. Until season 2 where she never shuts up.

I watched the first season of Gushing over Magical Girls and I thought it was alright but nothing amazing. Then I went to read the manga and HOOOOOOOOOOOLY SHIT its really good. It reminds me of Dowman Sayman manga, or at least the style of humor does (speaking of which go read The Dungeon That Kills All Adventurers it's also good). I hope the author pulls through whatever they're going through because I need more of this shit man.

Watched the Konosuba Leak.

Hello Darkness my old friend. One episode in and begging for death. We are in for a fucking ride bois.

Finished reading Dungeon Meshi. Guess it's another one that goes to the hall of fame of "had a consistent vibe and managed to stick the landing" along with Full Metal or Golden Kamui. I do think it was at it's best when it was just "oh, look at the weird critter we have to kill and eat today" but I won't deny that the whole dungeon lion and how capable that motherfucker was at poking and prodding people wasn't an absolute treat. That Laios fucked up and it still worked out thanks to eating is a testament to how this series stuck to it's guns and made it work. Also liked the long epilogue, would have liked a small timeskip one, but it's good enough.

Funniest moment of the show?

Rabbit necromancy, my god that shit was hilarious.

That shit had me in stitches and it managed to be hilarious and sad all in the same chapter. The other one is the changeling chapters elf Senshi and halfling senshi are a treasure for different reasons and deadbeat dad Chilchuck was also great.

And well, just Marcille's faces in general, this one being one of my favorites

Halfling Marcille going all out on acrobatics.

Was also surprised by Kui's range of expressions and faces. One thing I think Frieren goes overboard is with stoic face syndrome and I've gone through a ton of series with "same face syndrome", but Dungeon Meshi really made sure that each character had their "silhouette", there is one of those extra chapters where she goes through how each character's eyes and mouth look and make them distinct, and for the most part, she definitely succeeds. Is fantastic with the funny stuff, but the serious stuff and creepy stuff is also really well done without having to go ham on it. Looking forward to reading her other stuff since I believe it's mostly one shots anyway.

Definitely recommend and it's not a particularly long read.

I'm 26 episodes into Fairy Tail. It's why I've posted less in the last week lol. It's actually pretty good like my friend told me. The animation is very... weekly series, but it makes up for it in spirit. Esra is my waifu. Fight me.
Its a great show. The animation for the first 175 episodes (seasons 1-6) does look a bit dated. By the time you get to season 7 the animation looks a lot better but a lot of fans hated the new animation style. I thought it looked really good. Speaking of Fairy Tail I should probably finish it. I havent seen the Dragon Cry Movie or the Final Season. I should start on it before 100 year quest anime comes out this summer.

Finished season 3 of Gintama, overall a blast:
* Kin arc was one episode too long but still nice team arc.
* Previous shogun arc was kino, no shit Tsukuyo is the most popular heroine when she gets the spotlight in some of the best arcs. Wish it will change Katsura's character a bit considering it is a slight change in the status quo and he basically only exists for Elizabeth. Also Shogun sister reappears after literally 200+ episodes, the shogun himself is a total bro and probably the funniest slapstick character.
* Obi 1 was too silly at the start, but it's nice to have shinpachi and his sister get some character development so he's not just walking glasses.
* Final dog episode was tearjerking and a great ending for the season.

Watched a bit of the film before going to bed. It's pretty heartwarming how bad future shinpachi and kagura pay tribute to Gin. The joke about Gura becoming VA appropriate tsundere was hysterical.

April Fools Day is pretty popular date for anime birthdays, it's also the birthday of Isagi from Blue Lock, Sakuragi from Slam Dunk, and Subaru from Re:Zero. There's probably a few more out there.

I kinda like that the animation is a bit grungy. I grew up with Yugioh man. It reminds me a lot of that. I will say I'm hitting filler now, as in episodes between fights you can snip and lose nothing, but overall pretty bearable.

I've been re-watching and watching for the first time a bunch of Tenchi Muyo! series. Dunno if anyone else here is a Tenchi sperg or cares, but I have a lot of thoughts. So far I rewatched OVA 1-2 and part of universe and watched for the first time OVA 3-5, GXP, Paradise Shido-hen, and read the 3 translated light novels. I have yet to finish re-watching Universe and have never watched Pretty Sammy (which I want to do soon, I've heard its pretty good and seems to have its own fanbase outside of Tenchi), War on Geminar (also heard is good), or Ai. I watched a couple of episodes of Ai and it seems okay. There's also Tenchi in Tokyo, which I caught a bit of on Toonami back in the day and wasn't impressed by, so I'd like to fully watch that. There's also the three movies I need to re-watch/watch (I only saw 1-2 of them, idk). Then there's the manga of which I'd like to read the entire series of having only read a handful in the past. It's kind of crazy how big the series is, I kept forgetting and going back and adding stuff to the list while writing this. There's also Dual! Parallel Trouble and some other Kajishimaverse stuff but I think I can get to that later if ever.
