I an attempt to avoid dealing too deeply unti Church politik, I will try to wrap this back around to Nick:

There are some in the Church (my parish and diocese in particular) that takes care to involve and instill personal knowledge of the Faith into laity under careful tutelage. If they are taught to know and understand enough (as they are able) they are more well-equipped to resist false teaching and sceptics than those who must run to their father for am answer.

Nick seems not to have taken the time or care to try to learn or retain anything he was taught. I doubt he was much caught up by the militant atheists of the early millennium, but rather that his own insufferable ego and Pride led him down this path.
