I mostly agree with you but this doesn't seem to be a troubled young girl in need of emotional support or a friend like the scenarios you describe. There was obviously a power imbalance there, she was an aspiring artist and he was an established artist (never mind the fact that she was 17 and he was like 38 at the time). But just based off of my own experience--I wanted to be a comic book artist growing up and all of my mentors and connections were men in their 30s simply because it is a male-dominated field, and in any career you need connections to get ahead. Art especially.Men doing this are always either perverts or too autistic to understand the inappropriateness of the situation. There is no scenario in which an older non-family-member man needs to be a mentor or support system to a teen girl. There is no shared life experience or understanding there. No man I know would say that they would see it as their place to talk to some teen girl with advice. Teachers sometimes find themselves in that position since they are mandated reporters but a good teacher will quickly get the right resources involved and not play therapist to a student.
This goes for both genders. But women who come on to teen boys don't often deny it by saying they just wanted to be a friend or mentor etc.
@Lorne Armstrong is the only guy that a teen girl can reach out to. He's good to talk to.
Just based off of the messages she leaked, he did say some inappropriate shit (the "naughty girl" stuff is gross) but grooming? He told her that her art was good and she considered that "gassing her up". She claims he asked her to come over but in the DMs he said she could crash in a spare bedroom if she's ever in his state. That's the only evidence she provided. When he asks if she's 17 or 18 he appears to be asking in reference to art she showed him, and while that very well could have been nefarious (we'll never know because he's dead), let me tell you, the older I got it would blow my mind (still does) when teenagers are good at art. I am sure over the years I've said things like "I can't believe you're X years old, this is amazing" to younger artists.
She also says "he found me simply by me liking one of his pictures" that is... such a fucking weird thing to say. So when you get a like from a stranger on social media you don't go see who it was? Lol okay.
Ed was a maladjusted weirdo and a perv but this chick's claims of "grooming" and "he likes little highschool girls" just come off to me like a girl who grew up a little and realized he said some inappropriate shit but she blew it way out of proportion and people were quick to jump to ED IS A PEDOPHILE GROOMER, CUT ALL TIES WITH HIM IMMEDIATELY, LET'S GET A NEWS CREW AT HIS PARENT'S HOUSE. I dunno, maybe he really was and that's why he killed himself--as someone said earlier sometimes abusers will just do that as a big fuck you to everyone.
I will say the majority of the people I know who knew Ed well are mourning him, and not dancing on his grave or even saying anything about the allegations, even the lefty types who would otherwise be like "yeah it sucks he's dead but think of his victims!" Unless he was just really fucking good at hiding another side of himself, that's kind of telling to me.
