Hentai pretty much killed Arty Farty porn. If anything, Hentai hurts the American adult porn industry more than manga hurts American comic books.

Hentai didn't do shit besides fill in a dead niche. Those artsy fartsy films were already on the way out once everyone started getting them for free. What hentai really killed was the Western 2d scene. I can't think of anybody who's seen the old serial magazines they used to put out. You have to go out of your way and head to exhentai now.

I wasn't arguing in favor of it. The Japanese seem to only use the cheapest cameras around and the sex sounds take a lot of getting used to. Western porn really nails the rough bits by comparison and hentai is better on the comics page than animated imo.

Hentai fills the "impossible fantasies" niche, depicting situations and sex acts that are literally impossible IRL (blemish-free beautiful women of all shapes & sizes, naughty tentacles, absurdly disproportionately-sized partners, monsters, etc.) and covering topics you can't really touch with live actors (and that SFX can't quite pull off yet). Of course there's plenty of vanilla stuff too. Keep in mind as well when you're animating, you don't have actors to deal with, any imaginable position is possible, you don't have to worry about makeup or lighting, etc.
I don't think it "killed" western 2D art. It's just doing different stuff. But if it makes anyone feel better, hentai's overall quality is also declining pretty badly too. There's only a few studios still doing any OVA releases, and fewer still that release anything approaching competence. I'm astonished Queen Bee has survived -- their animation is the worst I've ever seen. Like 2-3 FPS. People who buy their shit are idiots.

I'm sure that the continuing enforcement of genital censorship in Jap porn is a factor here as well. When every actual sex act is made near incomprehensible you need to appeal to some other kind of horny-ness. If you've ever looked at a list of JAV titles you quickly notice that they sort into very specific niches in terms of fetish / type of actress.

It's always such a fun scandal when there are "leaks" of the original uncensored footage. They're also not too happy with AI-powered decensoring tools being so easy to get now either.
The censorship itself is also so bizarre. It goes in waves for one thing, based on the industry's current impression of law enforcement's "mood" concerning censorship. During periods where they're really worried about enforcement, the pixels are so big you can count them on one hand. At other times, it's just enough to hide the genitalia while not blurring pubic hair or even buttholes (unless there's anal sex happening on-screen, which makes it even funnier -- a butthole is only censor-worthy when stuff's getting shoved into it).
So stupid in the grand scheme of things, though. It's not like people don't know what's going on down there or what it looks like anyway.

You know, as much as I miss the '90s when pornstars pretended they were actual actors, it's regretful that every scene had to be so short in order to fit into a movie. I would have loved modern-style 40 minute scenes of Taylor Hayes and company instead of the cut-to-hell 7 minute crap they churned out.
Speaking of actual porn movies, it's time for the obligatory Jewel Raider mention:
Came out in 2001 and was supposed to be the start of a trilogy.
