The volume of counterfeit branded clothing must severely outnumber the genuine items. You go to these countries, see more people wearing luxury branded clothes than in first-world countries. Visit the markets and see everything is fake. Get fooled by the idea, "maybe I could get a cool fake expensive watch" and then see they'll all lame and shit.
During the height of the "you wouldn't download a car" stuff against downloading TV shows nad movies. I was visiting a lot of third world countries and every third shop was just a guy selling pirated DVDs. These countries are just ignored for constantly selling knock offs.

I live in Kenya and it's the same kind of poverty around here, but you can still get some surprisingly decent clothes. They get big piles of clothes donated from Western nations and it all ends up in the markets. Generally they just lay out a tarp or something and dump all of it on the floor without even bothering to siphon out the higher value stuff. I go down sometimes looking for deals, with a little digging you can find some brand new designer stuff (And even though I get charged white mans prices it's still a pittance)
