Also know no American redneck has ever been on a street car in Kerala, or even the entire country of India. American rednecks are not a species that would set foot in India, it’s very rare for them to ever leave the USA or even their region. If you saw an American in Kerala making a dumb joke about a toddler dancing it a burning man hippie type, a tech guy or possible an American-Indian, spouse of one or maybe just an Aussie, but not an American redneck. Feeling cunty so I am going to say more. There’s an older professor in my field who is almost universally reviled, and whose work is almost universally beloved. He’s (let’s say “he”) crabby, irritable, unhappy, lonely, and vindictive. He is among the most brilliant ppl I’ve met.

We don’t like the idea of the crabby genius, especially the crabby male genius, bc it seems to legitimize assholes who aren’t geniuses, or at least to make them altogether too comfortable being assholes. *Most* truly brilliant people I know are lovely; *most* assholes are idiots.

But not all. I can think of exactly one crabby genius, and he is unpopular and isolated. And I didn’t realize why until I’d known him for a few years: it’s because he is old and gay, and while his friends were dying in the 80s his colleagues were homophobic bigots.

Some of those colleagues died—he was younger then, not already old and crabby—and some mellowed. Some maybe apologized. But for the majority of his career, he was getting abuse in the teaching evals, promotion cases, ms. reviews, and book reviews. He got angry and remained so.

Nobody quite remembers that now—at least, only the small number of mentees with whom he has maintained relationships and a couple of others. These people share his fury and his grudges, though they don’t share his sense of exile. They don’t have to, so they can’t.

We’re living through an age of anti-trans hate of an unprecedented sort. Most of that is visible—god knows, anonymous accounts swarm me and call me a paedophile every other week. But some of it is invisible and consequential, and I’m terrified it is going to make me too angry.

At some point, when a particular file has been dislodged from the position it has occupied for nearly two years, I have some serious shit to get off my chest about my place of work. But it’s more than just “the Berkeley English department is a transphobic hellhole.”

I don’t know how to preserve my sanity in a profession that seems to delight in sabotaging it. It’s not just the bad guys, either—that’s the kicker. Some transphobes are brilliant, beloved, frequently cited. There are some among your faves, probably—certainly among mine.

Lol, I’m blood related to lots of 100% proud rednecks that I love dearly. They would look at you like you had two heads if you asked if they wanted to travel to the land of Pajeet street shitters.
