I find it really funny that he's basically a hardline Republican but he can no longer espouse those views because Jason's audience is so liberal and he doesn't want to scare them (and their money) away.
Most of his beliefs line up with social conservative values only, and I doubt that he's even hard on those aspects.

Jason plans to make a video about how Japan is car-centric:
I wonder what gives. Was he disappointed to find out that the Japanese have roads, cars, and parking lots?

Japan from what I've seen is just as car-centric as the Netherlands, that is to say absolutely not car-centric in urban centers but they still have cars so it's never good enough for urbanists. For example, on-street overnight parking is banned and you need to prove you can park your car off-street in order to own a car. (a) Can't wait to see him either not mention that policy or have an insane retarded quibble with it.

Was waiting for this one since he made that comment about how cars should be banned from the Shibuya crossing instead of having a pedestrian sprawl. Just another example of how he privileges the Netherlands above all other countries for no good reason. I hope he angers the weebs and we get lols from both sides.

It'll either be:

A) "Japan is great... but it's not the Netherlands"

or, my likely guess:

B) "Japan is car-centric... but that's ok because the cars are all tiny there! Look at these tiny trucks YOU can't have in America!" For whatever reason the fuckcars crowd eats up this specific model of truck like candy and it's even spread to normies in general.

The way they hate american trucks because they are big and scary and deadly and like japanese trucks because they are small and non-threatening is reminiscent of anti-2A people calling out AR-15s because they are black and tactical and hypermasculine or whatever

I'm going to Japan in a few weeks.

I've looked into renting a car and it would cost about $800. The places I want to go do not have parking. No literally none of them. I might be nice and visit a big grocery store that's slightly cheaper which has pay parking, but yeah probably not. Every road is 1/3 the size I'm used to, I can expect to go about 10mph on average in the deep suburbs of Tokyo, and heaven forbid if I go on the highway I have to pay per mile.

Such a cartopia.

The stupidest thing about all that kvetching about smol kei trucks is that Japan actually has heavy duty trucks akin to semis for industrial use. There's even a whole culture around decking out those big trucks: dekotora. Japan makes a lot of heavy duty trucks for export too from the like of Mitsubishi Fuso and Hino.

American trucks balloned in size because of the emissons regulations put in place by Obama. People miss the old rangers and s10's because they LITERALLY dont make them like they used to. They were small, fuel efficient and utilitarian and Obama came in and ass raped them into oblivion. The new ranger is as big as the f150 used to be in to 90's and early 2000's. I dont need or want a gigantic modern f150 thats made of 90% plastic including critical engine components. People also need to stop treating trucks like theyre luxury vehicles theyre NOT they were made to do WORK. Tbh i dont even consider 4x2 trucks to be true trucks. Theyre basiclly just lifted el Caminos.

Call me a boomer all you want i dont care

This is honestly what they should be arguing for, and what the reality in their cartopias is (europe, japan, etc) - cars are still quite nice for people who live there and know how and when to use them, but basically worthless for tourists - who can take the transit or taxi or equivalent.

How is it done? Comfortable and cheap transit without niggers.

Apart from the bughive believers, I think the "tourist" POV is clouding a lot of the way they think cities should be run and operated. Tourism is usually focused on walkable areas and easy access to certain hotspots, but reality is of course more complicated than that.

And if you dig into it, the people who are actually doing the work (building transit in the USA, the only country any of these fags actually CARe about), they're trying to do the right thing - identify corridors where they can use transit to alleviate travel congestion and reduce travel times. But that requires a wholistic Road-Guy-Rob style look at the real issue they're working on (getting people around to where they want and need to go) that is antithetical to the real issue the carfuckers are working on - Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism.

I hear this a lot, but that doesn't explain the explosion of American style SUVs in the UK. As far as I know, we don't have a similar law, and actually tax 4x4s. They are never used for work, and are instead driven by karens and boomers.

I have personally been to Tokyo, seen Shibuya, Akihabara, the Imperial Palace, the whole shabang. Even Osaka and Kyoto. Cars are still going to be necessary if you want to go to Mt. Fuji because Yuru camp or whatever. Japan’s JR rail system is remarkably efficient and very safe, though is still controlled by a company, so there has to be some way to make money. The main reason JR is profitable is that each stop is sort of like a mini-mall. BART in comparison has virtually no shops lined within their stations, thus it is mainly taxpayer-funded, oh also not to mention crime and fare-evaders.

An authoritarian regime like China could shut you out of transportation if you hold views the government deems wrongthink. It’s happening right now in cities where the Social Credit system has been implemented.

To an urbanist, every city is car centric, and they will not stop until you are off your car and on a train getting molested by chikan or worst.

Probably safety regulations? If you’re worried about a crash breaking your hip, an SUV is probably more comfortable and safe than your average economy car.

A vehicle with AWD or 4x4 is a lot easier to operate than a 2-wheel only, especially in cold and wet conditions, which Ol' Blighty is no stranger to. Aside from handling concerns, the extra space of an SUV is a lot more comfortable than a sedan, especially when talking about packing in the kids or getting things from a store. Basically, the exact same reasons an American would get an SUV.

I think it's a combination of:

1) People like the higher and usually more comfortable seating position
2) More aggressive look
3) More useful storage space compared to a sedan
4) Wide availability of AWD
5) Impression of better safety

And despite higher fuel and registration taxes, SUVs are popular in almost all major car markets.

And it's only grown since 2018.

Induced demand isn't a conspiracy to make "your life miserable", it's well established. The Redditor spergs are just shoehorning their own interpretation from confirmation bias. When a new road it built, it's not gonna make other roads less congested. It will simply open up to more commuters who otherwise wouldn't have used it in the first place, that's induced demand.

If you were to add another bike rack outside of a building, would it cause more people to make bicycle trips to that location? We both know that the number of people traveling by bicycle would remain unchanged. Why has this increase in capacity failed to bring an increase in consumption? Why was demand not induced? Building out a 100-lane highway in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness won't cause it to fill up. Hardly anyone wants to drive there.

Induced demand only exists to the extent that people actually want something. The reason they aren't making car trips now is because the existing road networks are too congested such that a trip is not as valuable as the time it would take. Adding more road capacity reduces the congestion and the time taken, which means trips that would otherwise be put off are now being made. The demand was always there, but the cost was too high and people unwilling to pay it.

Make something less expensive and people will tend to consume more of it, but if they never wanted it in the first place, you can't magically change their minds. Scoop up your shit and make it into sandwiches. See if you can induce demand by gradually slashing prices. I'm not even certain you could pay people to take your shit smeared bread.

Anyone who looks at people being able to make more trips and conduct whatever business that they wish to engage in as a bad thing are assholes. Ideally, technological progress will allow us to build less expensive, longer lasting roadways, without requiring much or any additional land. What argument can you make for not building those roads? It's like arguing against building more hospitals, movie theaters, or anything else that people actually want because you supposedly know better than they do and are the arbiter of what's best for them. Arguments against more roads are just as stupid.

I've never argued against more roads? I want better planned infrastructure which includes all options. I don't want more of anything if it's done poorly. Detroit is a good example of state ineptness and corruption.

I've made that point already. That's what I think "induced demand" is.
New roads = more people would use it, who otherwise wouldn't.
So there's more cars on the road. Not necessarily because there's more people in cities, but that's also usually the case.

This guy is unreal. When the local government in a city I worked at a decade ago was building a new subway system, they purchased and destroyed entire neighbourhoods for train stations, this included an extensive network of "stroads" that were relocated. Presumably he's okay with that.

They even dug out artificial rivers and buried another to "relocate the stroads". I guess that's not okay. He's mad because not everyone in Japan etc. are bugmen living in Tokyo 20sqm apartments for $2500 a month in rent.
I fail to see why he's mad apart from that, would he rather they don't buy back houses and simply connected those damn stroads anyway? What's the point of major highways if they're not connected in the first place?
