Ade isn't anyone special, seeing her as she is now would make most normal people realize that her leaving wasn't a big loss and let bygones be bygones, maybe even start talking about trying to give some financial support to his birth daughter given they're obviously not thriving (not as an excuse to be involved personally given that opportunity is already lost), but not for Pat. He was so thoroughly buck broken by Ade that he built his second, gayer personality all around coping with the fact she left him.
The $80k they paid Quasi trying to prop up this "I miss my ex wife" cope persona of Pat's would have gone a long way towards paying Annabelle's college expenses. That would have also been the right thing to do with part of his book advance money, but that would have been an actually concrete gesture instead of writing about her finding her way home in some gay foreword.
Honestly this shirking of responsibility is the most hateable thing about Pat.

Maybe late, but I think from the context what Tomlinson was trying to imply was that he had been to a (navy) recruiting office before (how much before? Months, years, decades? Who knows).

Presumably he was turned away but probably he wanted to keep his reply vague enough that it plausibly could read either way, so that if anyone pushes him on it he can say "chalker stild I never technically claimed that" while still making it look on first read to anyone watching the conversation very much like he was in the navy.
