Grace Lavery / Joseph Lavery & Daniel M. Lavery / Mallory Ortberg - "Straight with extra steps" couple trooning out to avoid "dwindling into mere heterosexuality"

I would not pay for a podcast if I had all the money in the world. If you want to summarize, I'm sure others would also appreciate it.
I think the first ten minutes or so might be available even if you’re not subscribed. But let’s see, I’ll try to summarize: She basically goes through the timeline of the throuple, ridicules everything about them, calls Joe Severus Snape, talks a little about Mallory’s cunty behavior with substack (taking the money and calling them nazis) and to her family, calls Joe a cult leader, mentions the Farms once. Not necessarily in that order.

So not anything new, I guess, but the venom was fun.

ETA: there are some good gossiping comments on the podcast Substack page, I’ll post them tomorrow, must sleep now.

The publishing house is investing in a novel about fictional characters, in a women’s hotel in the 1960’s, as imagined by transcuck Daniel Lavery who was born in 1986. I’m sort of dumbstruck it is being pitched as just quirky chick lit fiction, instead of being pitched as some sort of insightful nonsense by a modern transman dissecting mid-century female stereotypes and oppression because they can’t pitch it using Ortberg’s name recognition.

If only they could erase the last six years of Mallory’s absurd gender rabbit hole and being rebranded Lavery. It would probably seem like a predictable novel for Mallory Ortberg and pitched as Mallory finally jumping ahead a century in the quirky female satire genre.
The real question is what kind of literature is marketable with Mal's current identity?

Fundamentally, it seems like Mallory has a pathology about being given a lot by someone.

She's most comfortable when someone is deeply taking advantage, when a relationship is one-sided in the other person's favor. It's why she was in her element with Nicole and why she is still with Joe.

When someone gives her a lot, she can't stand it. It weighs on her. Once someone has given her something, they are more likely to be subjected to her intense scrutiny, and eventually, she must cut them off. I think it's because she knows she doesn't have anything that can actually put her even with something like her parents' love or her Substack deal, and the idea of being the person to whom much was given and much is expected destroys her. Expectations destroy her. Joe expects her to do less and less, become smaller and smaller.

The whole reason she LARPs as a young boy is that young boys have the least responsibility of anyone in our society, and the standards of care for other people are lowest. When Mallory is playing an 8 year old boy, she can be a very kind, caring one. Wow, a lil guy like that just helping out with the baby without complaint, golly, that's a good kid. Better rumple his hair.

She desperately wanted someone to take away from her the responsibility she felt to do something with her mind. Her parents tried to convince her she needed to aspire to something but she ended up at a fifth-rate garbage school. She lucked out with The Toast and people started expecting things again, giving her money, gushing over her. She has run from responsibility every way she can. Oh, so you liked her as a famous female writer with pithy, dry humor, eh? How about now that she's this long-winded dad joker baseball-capped boy?

In some ways, the person Mallory's arc reminds me the most of is Britney Spears.

I genuinely do not think Mallory wanted to be famous.

I think the success she experienced was antithetical to her vision of herself, and made her a worse person.

She has tried over and over to diminish the parts of herself that people might like or reward, holding each trait up to the light and then setting it on fire.

Britney Spears didn't want to be famous. People liked her blonde hair and her skinny bod with good abs and how young and fresh she looked, how unapproachable and teen-goddess like she seemed while maintaining an innocence, so she destroyed every one of those qualities systematically until she was bald and pudgy, with world-weary eyes that aged her and a romantic history that made it clear she was just a desperate dummy.

Mallory was liked for her down-to-earth vibe and the feeling that she could be anyone's bestie with the good joke and fun but wise advice, for the way she perceived women's issues and relationships with men and other women, and for the consistent quantity of at least tepidly humorous content she could be relied on to produce.

So she became a petulant "man" with an advice column that was notoriously bad, and started writing much less consistently while letting quality tank. She went to parties and deliberately behaved like a standoffish boor.

These women have signaled to everyone in the world that they'd be better off left alone and not becoming celebrity cults (microcults in Mal's case, but even so). But you can't just decide not to be famous. You can't ghost fame. You can't fade. Especially when you attach yourself to people who are there to steal your spotlight and humiliate you.

Something aimed at pretentious fujos, probably. Like a gay and pooned out version of Wuthering Heights. Something where some chick "transitions" into an Oscar Wilde type figure. A typical "man character as written by spinster" but with the quiet bits said loud. Hercule Poonot.

This is so irritating about her: the quirky, jokey treatment of great and profound art, seemingly for a narrow audience of simps.

She’s currently tweeting retarded little comments about Mansfield Park which are completely incomprehensible if you don’t know the book, and idiotic if you do.

Why, I cried into the night, why does she trivialise art, usually women’s art? It does not illuminate the work, does not encourage others to read them. And does anyone find this funny?

The comments by @Diana Moon Glampers and @Larry David's Opera Cape made it all snap into focus.

Let us consider Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre and Mansfield Park by Emily Brontë. Charlotte Brontë and Jane Austen respectively. Three very different writers, three very different books. The Brontës considered Austen weak stuff. Yet all three books have something in common: the danger and excitement of powerful erotic attraction (yes, even in Austen). Very strong, very adult, and with very serious consequences including but not limited to social ruin, insanity and death (and in WH, some light necrophilia).

Instead of confronting these erotically charged works, she turns them into tweets. She castrates them so they are fit for bookish teen girls / women afraid of their own sexuality. And in so doing, she trivialises the authors’ greatness and excuses her own lack of it. She is as big a misogynist in her own way as Joe. No wonder she turned herself into a female eunuch, to borrow a phrase from another female writer unafraid of sexuality, Dr Greer. Ol’ Germs would despise Mallory, and rightly so.

New episode of Blocked and reported starts out with Katie Herzog hating on the throuple for a good ten fifteen minutes. It’s a premium episode, but it’s worth it.
Here's a teaser of Katie first running into the article a week ago.

I was a bit disappointed Katie lended more credence than necessary to the pedo accusations against Mal’s brother. He’s not a non-offending pedo, he’s got POCD and this is why his father didn’t think he was any danger to kids. His son wasn’t a non-offending pedo, but a guy with intrusive thoughts. I don’t even believing in non-offending pedos, just ones that haven’t been caught.

How I went from believing Mallory’s accusations to realizing she was spewing bullshit to please Joe.
After interviewing over 100 campers and children that had been around her brother and not turning up even the whiff of inappropriate behavior I think he’s safely in the “not a pedo” camp. I think Mallory knew this too, but she was willing to ruin her brother and father for more praise from Joe. I actually think “destroy your family” was a contingent for Joe marrying her.

If one would go back to the beginning of this thread you’d notice I started out buying into poor Mallory raised by evil conservative Christian parents. Parents that were actually terrible people willing to let a pedo around kids to save their reputations.

It was her pinning a tweet by that very obvious schizo whack job, that has accused every man she’s ever met of rape, and even one’s she’s never met, that John Ortberg raped her that stopped me in my tracks. It got me to think if Mallory would spotlight obvious rank bullshit like that then she’s not exactly credible on other stuff either.

At that point I started digging deep into the whole Ortberg drama, the anonymous accusations, then public, the local blogs, all the drama coverage with Joe in the comments having a ball, the official investigations, the reports published, etc… It became obvious Mallory just threw her family under the bus with false accusations to satisfy the narc drama boner of the creep she was dating. Joe was high on the drama and chaos of the whole shitshow. He loved it.

It all reflects terribly on Mallory, but I think the most bone chilling part was she knew deep down her brother was innocent and no danger to kids, but that was not important in the scheme of her and Joe’s campaign against her dad. His innocence was besides the point, it was all about demonstrating some moral failing on Dad Ortberg at any cost. Dad Ortberg knew Joe was a creep and didn’t like him dating Mallory, so Joe told Mallory they needed to show him who was in the driver’s seat now. Trying to prove John Ortberg was a an amoral hypocrite, regardless of whether he was or not, was Joe’s holy mission.

I think this entire thread is just undeniable proof Mallory is a dangerous, dishonest, weak fool.

I do give Katie credit for calling out Joe as the little creepy, attention hungry, micro-cult leader that he is. Joe is just mad he got dowdy, confused middled aged women desperate to be hip to go join and why he resents Berkeley not letting him prey on undergrads once he donned troon-face.

Extra points for mentioned loony and ex-bestie Nicole Cliff and her menstrual cup in the uterus. I didn’t realize Nicole was such a troon handmaiden that she declared jihad on Jesse. Was she going after Jesse for questioning that weird fat troon she had a manic affair with for a few weeks? I really wish we had an update on the fallout after that bit of clown world absurdity.

I could honestly see Nicole trying to troon one of her kids out and Steve giving her the boot.

I recall her hatred for Jesse starting way before that, like around the time Katelyn Burns and Jesse were beefing. Nicole said she had a bunch of anonymous tips from people about how much Jesse harassed trans people in DMs, without ever revealing any evidence, as usual.

Full trans treatment. Even the cover artist is a pooner.

Apparently this is a "remix" set of classic literature which makes them legally published gay fanfiction, trans optional.

I'm just upset they didn't use your title.

She desperately wanted someone to take away from her the responsibility she felt to do something with her mind.
So what do you (or any other kiwis) think Mallory truly wants? What are her goals, if any, and what is her ideal life?

I'm so glad Katie has the most sane reaction towards all this. It's nice to see someone critiquing them who's on twitter.

This made me laugh.

I love it when he feels trivialized. :story:

She castrates them so they are fit for bookish teen girls / women afraid of their own sexuality. And in so doing, she trivialises the authors’ greatness and excuses her own lack of it.
Much like she has castrated herself, of course. Have a cigar, Herr Doktor.

I just realized with this posting of that pic that Joe is holding up Mallory's head from behind like they're doing a Weekend at Bernie's. Grim.
I have some bad news:
I would be remiss if I did not chip in:

Let the record state that "Gabe Cole Novoa" is Isabelle Novoa.
So what do you (or any other kiwis) think Mallory truly wants? What are her goals, if any, and what is her ideal life?
Her entire life has been one big flail. If you asked her what she wanted she would probably make some snarky remark to deflect. If you pressed her, she'd be outright rude and hostile. Such things are not spoken of, because it points to her inherent weakmindedness.

She probably would have been pretty happy as a a youngest child in 15th century Germany. Sent to the nunnery to scrub floors and tend the herb garden, under the watchful eye of a mother superior she would at once loathe and adore.

One of the things that most stuck out in my mind as a teen when reading books by the Brontë sisters or Austen was the extreme gravity and importance of romance and marriage. It was the sword of Damocles looming over every women’s head. Not surprisingly, with this perspective Emily Bronte and Austen avoided marriage entirely while Charlotte Brontë married then within a year died in childbirth to really drive home the stakes involved

I just find it ironic that Mallory read these same books then preceded to choose the most horrific husband imaginable that did actually ruin her life, her prospects, her reputation and her family in both old fashion and modern ways.

Daniel Eyre, the insane pooner wife locked in the spare bedroom and forced to work menial jobs, while Joe and Lilly frolic with master Rocco.

Since I’m also convinced it’s a case of intrusive thoughts I sort of assume all reasonable people think so (I know, these assumptions have not served me well in the past), so I didn’t pick up on that. Interesting!

I think it's amazing how many people could ruin Jesse Singal's life and just don't because of how good of people they are above the kind of nasty methods Jesse uses.

Women's Hotel is available on NetGalley (US site only):

As you can see from the two generic microreviews currently there, fulfilling the requirement to leave a review on NG can be easily dispensed with, if you even want to bother with that.

If you plan to sign up for an NG account, request the book, and then post about it on KF, be sure to practise good opsec, so as not to out yourself to the publisher's marketing department (who will know who's made a request).

"Oliver comes to find that Darcy is actually a sweet, intelligent boy"

BOY. Of course he's a "sweet boy" isn't that what every gay man wants? Wait, what? Teen girls, you say? Nah. These are some manly, manly men we're talking about. Tom of Finland is just a sweet boy with an oversized packer.

I just realized with this posting of that pic that Joe is holding up Mallory's head from behind like they're doing a Weekend at Bernie's. Grim.
Same. It actually sent a little spike of horror through me when I noticed his fingers. One hand is intertwined with Lily's under the swell of her pregnant belly. The other is wrapped around Mallory's neck.

Ooof, poor if that was Mall's Pajeet agent "visiting" us in the thread earlier. I can imagine that a lot of Mall's potential audience would listen to something like Blocked and Reported as it's a bit spicy, but still sanitized enough for that kind of lib they're going to want to reach.
