Ncuti Gatwa, the first Black Doctor Who, was extremely outspoken in a new interview.

Gatwa is an LGBTQ Rwandan immigrant to the U.K. and made his comments to the magazine Attitude for its May/June issue.

Asked about backlash on his assuming the role of Doctor Who, he said that it’s all part of a shift. “We do see a shift happening in casting, in positions of power and in the status quo. I mean, not a fast shift, things could tip over the other way a little bit quicker. But you see people kind of malfunctioning because things are changing.”

Ncuti talked of his battle for acceptance. “There’s so much White mediocrity that gets celebrated, and Black people, we have to be absolutely flawless to get half of [that] anyway. So, I’m slowly training myself out of that and being like, ‘No sh–. You deserve love just for existing.’”

Gatwa was asked about the U.K.’s struggle with gender diversity and trans identities.

"Everything trickles down from the top, and when you see politicians openly attacking marginalized communities, when you see our politicians openly attacking trans people, it makes it OK for everyone else,” Gatwa said. “And it is scary to see that we’ve got to a point where it is fine to attack vulnerable people because that’s essentially what’s happening. People who are the most vulnerable, the most disenfranchised, most disconnected from everyone else are being told that they are the threats.”

He added, “It’s sick because it’s a hiding away of your own ineptitude. You’re going to put the blame on immigrants, Black and Brown people, trans people, queer people, to hide the fact that you are not doing anything for people? It’s easier to just create discord amongst people. It’s divide and conquer, isn’t it?”

Gatwa said that “We’ve got to keep pushing for more. Lots and lots and lots and lots more diversity, lots more inclusion on our screen. Lots and lots and lots of it for all you male gamons out there!”

In U.K. slang, the term “gamon” refers to the color of a person’s flushed face when expressing their strong opinions, as compared to the type of pork of the same name.

It's pretty transparent isn't it?

- but instead of visiting historical periods where a black man sticks out like a sore thumb, they could do literally anything else and spare us the lecture.
Why couldn't they visit ancient Kush or Benin or somewhere where you'd expect black people? Instead they just keep retconning European history and shoehorning in black and Asian people instead of actually telling some black or Asian history. I've heard black sci-fi fans describe it like "giving us white people's sloppy seconds". There's tons of interesting stories and settings and historical figures they could meet. Even Chibnall got that right, they went to the Punjab during Partition and met loads of Punjabis and learnt about their history. The TARDIS can go anywhere and any time, why's it.got such a hard-on for England?

Also Barrowman was a known wrong'un, perving on everyone on set, and RTD was fine with it. There's all sorts of rumours about RTD doing casting couch shit with his actors. Basically whenever there's a twink who can't act, assume that's how they got the job.

I think "Ethnic Cleansing" needs to make a big comeback but instead in these 'rich countries'. It's not white nationalism it's just taking out the trash.
Can't agree with that, but I think anyone whose parents fled to escape it who then complains how bad the country that sheltered them is should be slapped in the face on live television by a disappointed mother.
I had a friend say colonialism was really to blame for the genocide which means actually it was the white man's fault. I'm sure this guy probably thinks the same.
It's arguably so, the Belgians formalised the existing ethnic divides. Believing all ethnic cleansing happens because of white people is par for the course as far as these claims go but I doubt Ncuti believes it. He's just one more bit of blight on the BBC who is desperately aiming for Disney these days.

Fuck you, you entitled, spoiled, racist twat. If people aren't watching your shitty television show, it's not because you're black, it's because you suck. There have been a metric fuckton of black actors in Doctor Who since the reboot, just like there have been a fuckton of female actors, and how popular they were depended on both the writing and their personal merit. If those previous minority actors can make it, so can you. If the only way you can snag an audience is by screaming at them that they're raycist and biggots, you are the problem, not the audience.

you will forever be know as "that black faggot"
This is kiwifarms, he deserves the full "two words", even if he was White and vanilla hetro
but instead of visiting historical periods where a black man sticks out like a sore thumb,
A much better episode had half-Ghanan companion met Shakespeare. Her initial offense at being called a dark lady disappeared when she realised it was a complement
Paterson Joseph or Chiwetel Ejiofor come to mind.
This a million times this

That's rich considering every advert seemingly has niggers in it and there's niggers starring in every show simply because they are black and nothing else. No talent niggers cruising by purely on DEI quotas.

You just haven't earned it yet, baby.

And with that attitude, he won't make it. If he's lucky the show will collapse entirely now, and his name will be recorded alongside its demise. I can't imagine who the primary audience is for Dr Who in current year, it certainly isn't kids interested in science. There hasn't been any science in the show's science fiction for decades.

Blake's 7 was always the better show, especially with the fuck everything ending. Nothing like a bit of bleak dystopia to prepare kids for the real world.

These people know they're full of shit, it's just like the Puritans who would bemoan widespread sin and how we just need to be more devout to alleviate God's wrath. Once you understand woke freaks as atheist zealots their nonsense makes total sense. We have wacky religious upheavals every few centuries but science killed God so these people channel their rage into other slights they can find.

There's another good bit with Martha, when they're undercover in an Edwardian school. The sympathetic character of Joan is still a reflection of her time

There's other times they touch on racism, like an episode with Peter Capaldi -

The difference was this these weren't the plot of the episode, they were moments within it. Jodie Whittaker's incarnation put people off because there were long winded speeches from characters reflecting on how they were impacted by the events of the episode... and ironically still got called racist because at one point, The Master (played by Sacha Dhawan) is hiding out with Nazis while disguised as a white German, and she disables his cloaking mechanism so the Nazis see he's Indian and then take him off to be tortured.
Although lectures may be preferable to goblin-based musical interludes.

Made me think about how Christopher Eccleston (the 9th Doctor) openly HATES RTD and the other producers of Doctor Who. I mean its been what 20 years since he did the show and the wounds haven't healed.

I mean this boils down to hearsay, but after Saville & Weinstein anything is plausible.

Further, Eccleston revealed he suffered from mental health issues during the filming of Doctor Who, “Many times I’ve wanted to reveal that I’m a lifelong anorexic and dysmorphic. I never have. I always thought of it as a filthy secret, because I’m Northern, because I’m male and because I’m working-class. The illness is still there raging within me as the Doctor. People love the way I look in that series, but I was very ill. The reward for that illness was the part. And therein lies the perpetuation of the whole sorry situation.”
Guy sounded like he had a number of problems. I'd take his comments with a grain of salt unless he's more open about what the issues were.

Regarding Black Doctor, god only knows how preachy the show is going to be if it continues as it is. Made me curious of the timeline of the showrunners though.

RTD handled til 2010, then we had Moffat til 2017, then it was Chris Chibnall til 2022. The woman Doctor showed up in 2018, so seems like Chris Chibnall's doing getting the show completely pozzed.

Was wondering why they brought back the Tenth Doctor for that special last year and apparently that guy left towards the end of RTD's run in 2010.

So RTD seems like he did the most popular Doctors while Moffat oversaw the show's decline until we got the completely pozzed showrunner (got bored watching the show during the Twelfth Doctor which was still during Moffat's time). While now we see the original showrunner returning in an attempt to save the show while it gets introduced to Disney. This makes me question whether the show is really going to be as hamfisted about the race stuff as people are fearing.

I think a lot of American viewers were like me and tuned out when Amy Pond left. Karen Gillian is still one of the prettiest women in the world. And hell the next girl who took over is also really cute but come on a hot redhead is just not something you see regularly.

So I just found out that they've cast British Stacy to be the Ncuti's companion. All I have to say is I AM SO THANKFUL that Davies hired the zestiest black man since RuPaul because it would have been so tiring if we had to endure nerd rage that a petite blonde girl was going to be BLACKED.

Nigger, you have an earring. You will never be taken seriously. And of course, you're too stupid to realize your casting is just ragebait.

Sticking out like a sore thumb does not automatically mean one will be treated poorly. In a lot of these settings, an urbane black man speaking the King's/Queen's English would have been quite well-received. He might have been an object of curiosity, but there's some social advantage in that.

Also those bastards took away Missy and I WILL NEVER FORGIVE THEM

They should've done a season of Missy traveling time and space pretending to be the Doctor. They'd probably screw it up, but the concept is a good one.

Pretty sure it's the other way around. Black mediocrity is the driving force of global culture in Current Year, and it's the only reason this guy has a job.

He should go back to Africa and advocate for troons and queers. Maybe he can share them in getting a "necklace" for his concerns.
