Which game series had the worst anniversary celebration? - Those are supposed to be special events, but some games just insult the players instead.

Klonoa's 25th anniversary was dissappointing.

They released a garbage remake of the 2 mainline PlayStation games (Door to Phantomile and Lunatea's Veil) that featured:

- Amateurish models with stiff animation. (Seriously look at Klonoa 1's player model)
- Mish-mashed audio from both the original PS1 release and the Wii remaster for the Klonoa 1 remake, meaning voicelines could be either crystal clear or noticeablycompressed.
- Lackluster graphics.
- A soundtrack album DLC that when purchased could ONLY be listened to from THE GAME itself.

Other than that I don't know much since those alone have turned me off from buying the game, What I know is that it brought in a lot of troons to make the poor furfag with a Pac-Man cap into one of their trans headcanon projections.

If you want to play Klonoa just get an emulator.

I'm pretty sure Rockstar only released the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition for GTA III's (and by extension, Vice City and soon to be San Andreas) 20th Anniversaries.

Edit: They might have released some T shirts in GTA Online too. Can't remember for sure.

2nd Edit: I think they also released the main trios default shirts and suit in GTA Online for the GTA V 10 year anniversary.
R* didn't even acknowledge GTA IV's tenth anniversary. Only by removing several songs from its radio stations, Vladivostok FM and Liberty Rock Radio being the most affected.

Pretty sure Sonic '06 was an anniversary game.
And the botched GBA port of the original Sonic the Hedgehog title.

This. I got really excited when I saw UT was on a list for potential crossovers for Fortnite, I have a feeling they're going to do the same to Jazz too.
Unreal's current audience be like when they see the UT x Fortnite collab:
"fr wtf 💀 R deez unreel niggaz doing in my fortnite 🤣🤣🤣 finna lookin like halo rip offs 😭😭 on god not BUSSIN at all wtf y no black cheracters with fade thats so gay n cringe female characters got no GYATT cant goon or edge to this LMAO" and then they still pay $60 in v-bucks to buy all the Unreal Tournament cosmetics anyways on the Fortnite shop.

This is more coincidence than anything but OutRun's 25th anniversary in 2011 pretty much perfectly coincides with Sega delisting OutRun Live Arcade from online stores due to their Ferrari license expiring (with the Ferrari license never being renewed and, as such, there has never been an official re-release/remaster of any variation of OutRun 2 ever since).

Adding to this, they fucked up the wind bullet in the first game so it's shorter ranged, the models and stiff animations completely ruin any emotion the cutscenes had since it looks like the characters are smiling in emotional moments, all the atmosphere of the second game is completely gone due to the over abundance of bloom with missing facial animations, shaders, and details like the crowd in joilant being completely still while in the original PS2 version they were animated and among more details gone without a single patch years later to fix any of this
all this while the fanbase lies to themselves and others that this is a good remake and yelled at everyone to buy it and buy multiple copies on different systems completely ignoring the fact there is no reason for bandai to bring back klonoa and this was a blatant nostalgia cash grab

Here’s how Nintendo celebrated Super Mario Bros.’s 35th anniversary:
  • They removed Mario 3D All Stars from the eShop and stopped selling it in stores to get FOMO sales so people would care less that it was a lazy overpriced cash grab collection
  • They removed Super Mario Bros. 35 from the eShop and shut down the servers, making it completely unplayable
  • They removed the ability to upload levels in Super Mario Maker 1 (they also shut this feature down a few days earlier than announced because people were - to Nintendo’s horror - trying to back up the Bookmark site before it was taken down)
  • They also took down the original NES Fire Emblem from the eShop on the same day because… reasons?
All of these were marketed as positives that made the anniversary feel more special.
The headlining promo product for the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. back in 2010 was a Wii game with a special box. Which Wii game? Super Mario All-Stars. For those unaware, All-Stars is a collection of the first three mainline Mario games (plus Japan's Super Mario Bros. 2) remade in 16-bit. This released on the Super Nintendo in 1993 and the Wii version was a straight romdump. It wasn't even the version of the game that also had Super Mario World built-in. You still had to buy that separately on the Wii Shop Channel for like $6. Other than that, there was a version of the original Super Mario Bros. available for download on the Wii, but only in Japan. It was just the original game but with the ? blocks edited to say 25.

The cherry on top was that for a very long time, this product was quite the collector's item and regularly fetched high prices secondhand. Now it can be found pretty easily and for cheap, presumably because even the most diehard Nintendo consoomers realized that a romdump of a 17 year old game on a Wii disc paired with a tiny art booklet and music CD (mostly composed of miscellaneous sounds from the old games) wasn't even close to being worth what soulless eBay faggots were trying to get for it.

$30 for SMAS on a disc, an exclusive art book, and soundtrack CD is… not great, but definitely not terrible. 3D All Stars was full retail price and didn’t come with jack shit unless you count being able to listen to each game’s OST in the game itself.

But the cream of the crop is Kirby’s Dream Collection on Wii to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary. All six mainline games up through 64, a new set of challenge stages made in Return to Dream Land’s engine (so basically a mini-expansion for the newest game), a nice history section full of info about past games with gameplay footage and music, and three episodes of the anime. Plus an art book, a soundtrack CD, and a metal badge; all for $40.

I was going to mention Sonic 06, but someone beat me to it. Sega rushed it to release in 2006 to align wit the 15th anniversary. They did this despite it being awful, full of glitches, Yuji Naka's departure, inexperienced leadership, unknown new hardware, and a split team to develop 2 games one for Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 and the Wii. The Wii game ended up being Sonic and the Secret Rings which was almost as bad as Sonic 06. So, I say Sonic and the Secret Rings since a guy already said Sonic 06.

The sad part is that Sonic 06 would have been a good game, maybe even a great one, if they spent another six months fixing the bugs and improving character models. Just look at Project 06.

Sonic has caused absurd amounts of damage to autists in the world, I shudder to think what a successful 06 would have done with it's human on hedgehog romancing action. It's one of those moments where it's for the best.

WoWs 10-year-anniversary (I think) was pretty anemic. If I remember correctly it amounted to a pet and a battleground with Tarren Mill vs. Southshore that utterly missed the point of why those organic PvP battles were so memorable.

Sonic 06's problems go so far beyond bugs and character models. Look at what came before it, and look what it took from them. Heavy combat focus from Heroes and Shadow. Endless levels and hoards of damage sponge enemies from the same. The physics of every playable character are fucking awful, even Sonic feels incredibly slow, which at least Heroes and Shadow got right. The designs of the overworlds are fucking atrocious, they're gigantic empty fields with fucking nothing in them. Don't even get me started on the story. Sonic Team in '06 were pumping out shit like NiGHTS 2. 06 was not magically going to be even remotely good with an extra 6 months.

I see tons of retards saying shit like this, especially since that PC port gained notoriety. A PC port which is staying as true to the original as possible, to the point of detriment. And if you're someone who played Sonic 06 and said "Wow this would be a fantastic game if I it was less buggy" then I can't help but think I'm talking to the kind of person who also thinks Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog are a good games, because they're definitely better than 06.

And if that's the case, you are my enemy.

ESO now qualifies. The (ongoing? recently concluded? I can't really be bothered to check) 10th anniversary was just a gay XP boost along with re-releasing 4 cosmetic items that were previously limited and only available in 2014 IIRC.
Now, that might not exactly sound devastating, but here's the kicker - apparently the main game was unavailable for a single day to some people who were participating in the PTS of the new DLC. They went on to screech so hard to the support that they were given ALL LIMITED COSMETICS/COLLECTIBLES/TOKENS* for free, along with 16000 of "crate currency" which can be used to purchase lootbox items. To put things in perspective, 16000 is over a year of doing dailies/weeklies and is enough to get an "apex" (aka jackpot) item from a crate. Again, all for missing out on a single day.
*To get these cosmetic items, you have to farm specific zone bosses, use specific zone fish nodes, and participate in mindnumbingly boring "mass mob slaughter" events. Personally it took me 9 days to get these, and I have almost given up hope on the last one. Some people still didn't get theirs, and the anniversary ends either today or tomorrow. There's a shitty horse mount you can unlock with 25 tokens, of which you can get 1 per day, and the event lasts 3 weeks. The rest must be bought with either money or limited currency.

Half-Life 2's upcoming 20 year anniversary on November 16th will be the worst.
Source: my ass.
The team that worked on the Half-Life 2: Update is working on Half-Life 2: Remastered Collection, so expect a similar celebration as with Half-Life 1. A new update that faithfully updates and improves upon the originals with a few extra touches on the side. Maybe even a Valve-made documentary about the creation of Half-Life 2, that would be nice. It'll still be more respectful than just about every other anniversary celebration nowadays.

R*'s 10th anniversary celebrations are the best. They forcefully remove all the licensed music they didn't bother to expire the license for from digital copies. Fuck them, the GTA community showed more care for their titles than themselves. GTA V was a travesty and marked the death of R*.
R* didn't even acknowledge GTA IV's tenth anniversary. Only by removing several songs from its radio stations, Vladivostok FM and Liberty Rock Radio being the most affected.
Yeah exactly that. I'm really mad over Vladivostok FM. It's thanks to GTA IV and this station I discovered Kino and Viktor Tsoi, but they've nuked about every song on that station aside from that one Seryoga song he made specifically for GTA IV.

To add insult to the injury, the new replacements they've added aren't period accurate culturally important picks like Kino, Leningrad, Splin, Glyukoza, Ruslana, or even Bi-2 that was meant to appear on the station with the song from Brat 2, which showed just how much old R* cared about showing appreciation and respect to their Eastern European audience, no. It's a bunch of random songs, a few from Seryoga, and then there's a song from 2010, 2011 and fucking 2016 thrown in there. Absolutely zero respect.

Those fan-made alternative stations are much more faithful. Besides the examples I brought up, they also have bands like DDT, Korol I Shut, Agata Kristi, Lyapis Trubetskoy, and they understand what type of music was meant to be on that station more than modern R*. But that would imply they even cared about keeping Vladivostok FM accurate in any way. They added those songs just because the license expiration removed so much that it would feel too out of place to only have one song on it.

LRR or any other station didn't suffer as much as Vladivostok FM. In case of LRR, the only songs that got removed were 1979, Edge of Seventeen, Evil Woman, Fascination and Heaven and Hell. Not enough to warrant finding replacements, but it was still bad. Well, any R* 10 year "anniversary" removal is bad, but what happened to Vladivostok FM was a crime against humanity.

Now besides sperging about GTA soundtracks, this'll go against the thread's theme because I don't know any other bad anniversary celebrations, but I do know a good one that's fairly recent. RWS' Postal 2 20th anniversary. The way they dealt with it was by releasing a fan-made patch for the game, xPatch, officially on Steam. It was made by a single Polish dude that's a die hard Postal 2 and old RWS fan, he has put a lot of care into it and ended up getting hired by RWS to do this update.

Besides fixing a shitton of bugs and rebalancing, he also backported a bunch of Paradise Lost features back into Postal 2, like giving NPC's the finger or dual wielding, and with all the old content restoration also came a new Classic Mode. If you don't know, the Steam version of Postal 2 is very different from the original game that released in 2003. A lot of assets have been updated and fan content has been implemented as a part of the base game. Classic Mode restores Postal 2 to what it was when it first released, since Chrzan is this much of a Postal 2 autist.

This is how you do proper anniversary celebrations, and Valve is doing the same for Half-Life 2 with the Remastered Collection. Let the passionate fans give your game justice, it saves you time having to come up with something and it shows that you care about the fans of your games, the people that made you who you are. But for that you need devs that give a shit about their legacy, and just about every major AAA company only gives a shit about the green line going up.

R*'s 10th anniversary celebrations are the best
The GTAIII 10th Anniversary was actually pretty decent. They released some decent merch and it was one of the few times they did a development Q and A. I think they got Dan Houser (or someone) to finally open up about Darkel even.

But yeah, that was still firmly "old" Rockstar before GTA V was released.
