Keep in mind they're not referring to their own crimes, or migrant crime in general. They're talking about infidels eating a bacon sandwich or dressing immodestly. A lot of atheists are completely unable to own up to their atheism without adding a "but".
"I'm an atheist but I have lots of religious friends".
"I'm an atheist but I'm not a dick about it".
And so on.
As if they've done something wrong and are trying to make amends for it.
My idea of an edgy atheist is simply someone who 1) doesn't apologize for it, and 2) dunks on religious sheeple without any qualms like we did back in the "good old days".

That's because most edgy atheists are looking for something to replace religion with. They don't really want to eliminate religion from their life, they want to find something for them that isn't what their parents had.

Braindead punchline aside - how often, if ever, do you see a scenario where a Christian wants to talk about something related to their faith, and a bunch of mean atheists just burst out laughing? 99.9% Of the time they'll just politely feign interest, and maybe mention in passing that they're not a believer.
