It's because of Skyrim and Bethesda's and Valve's greed. When Skyrim was released the most popular place to post mods was the Steam Workshop. Then in 2015 Bethesda and Valve decided to try out this new idea of charging people for mods. A number of mod authors did some shady shit like have a free version of their mod with limited features and a literal pop-up ad in game for the paid version. This pissed off everyone and they all went to Nexus Mods to post their Skyim mods. Today there are a few alternatives but the sites are in Russian, Korean, or Japanese or it's Lovers Lab which there is a very vocal minority of mentally ill asexual zoomers that hate it because there's sex mods.

Elianora, a BPD Finnish slut who's known for making basic bitch player home mods in Skyrim and Fallout, got her job at Bethesda by banging the CEO of Nexus mods. If you've played Starfield and got tired of seeing clutter in every pirate base and random office you can thank Elianora for that.
