All you need to do to be exempted from the "NO EXCEPTIONS UNLESS YOU'RE AN INFANT BABY CHILD" mask policy is to wear a huge gunt, a m'lady hat, and a bunch of those retarded stickers for your badge. A greasy, stinky food item wouldn't hurt either.

He gets invited because the conventions have kicked out anybody serious and talented for wrongthink and Rick has managed to get books published and parrots the right talking points so as long as they don't look too hard he seems like a fine choice to get what little base of people are still willing to attend those shitty things to actually pay for tickets. Plus he's fat so he'll make the anemic crowds look a lot bigger. When they actually do look into him they see what the rest of us do and that's not a good look or someone you want to associate with.

It's usually about who you know on the board. Having worked with a few cons I can also guarantee you that at the smaller ones you could throw your interest out there to a con and go 'look! published author!' and if it looks impressive enough you're in.

Exactly this. There are basically two types of cons; big huge ones that you or your company has to sponsor to get a speaking slot, or tiny little shit ones that will basically take anyone who asks.

This one certainly doesn't have big pull as you can tell from them having a perpetual-GoH of a literal fat tranny drag queen.
They either absolutely LOVE that person or they have no alternative. GoHing is literally supposed to be some extra yearly flavor to the proceedings, having it stagnant is not a healthy sign.
